But I want to ride to Mexico for a short ride. Grab some lobster in Puerto Nuevo or Rosarito [o Ensenada si prefiere un lugar muy bonita] for an hour then jam home!
I would go, but people have convinced me that a girl going down there by herself on a bike isn't the best idea. So how bout we get a pack goin??
Who's interested??

Not too interested. Officiated a wedding a couple of months ago, and the bride's parents were pulled over for "suspicion" and it cost them 300 beans to continue on... Not liking the po-po down there for that reason. If you look at them wrong, they can pull you over and "demand" payment of a fine on the spot.

Oh yeah, that's the other reason. Pick the worst road north of the border, and it'ld be the best on the south side.

its 2 tollbooths going there and back...

Oh damn! They got hosed! If you get pulled over from some BS. Ask to go to the police station to pay the fine (they way it is supposed to be done) they will usually drop the issue because at that point they will see none of that fine. They'd rather go find some other sucker. Now if you really did do the crime, you can sometimes avoid the hassle of going to the station and sometimes pay a smaller fee by asking to pay on the spot, which goes directly to the cops pockets.

If we do this, we gotta make sure we have some meeting spots, or everybody stays together, cause if you're not paying attention, it's really easy to get lost in TJ and a group ride through a 5-lane rotary does not sound like a picnic. Also, I just rode down to Rosarito last weekend and I think the toll was $2.45. It's a good idea to have quarters taped up, or the exact change rolled up in a bill. I think I dropped about a pocketfull of change on my way back up...after handing her 2 bucks, she said, "that's okay". I think Mexico is more supermoto friendly, or maybe streetfighter...especially when it comes to fording the river of sewage on the way back to TJ...me and some local rider had to ride with our feet sticking straight out in front of us to avoid soaking our shoes in smelly water from a big azz puddle we rode through. Lane-splitting past the tiger cage was fun too...so were the stray dogs that like to chase motorcycles.

I was just in Mex on Saturday. I was wishing I had my bike to split the border line!! Anyways, I don't think it's crazy to ride the northern baja area as far as the toll road goes (Ensenada).
Tolls are 2.45$, there are 3 booths to Ensenada on the way down. Puerto Nuevo is only about 1 booth down.
Let me know how it goes, because I've considered doing this same trip! I'd volunteer to go down, but I'm busy on Sun...
Oh, also, re: cops- If you're speeding, you're bait. Just go with the flow of traffic and stay in the right lane. If you get pulled over but honestly didn't do anything wrong, the real process is to "discuss" the ticket with the judge at the "station". So, yes, you follow the cop to the police station right away and a fine/ticket would be determined.
The cops will prey on ignorance of the judicial system down there and try to intimidate you into paying them a bribe. Don't do it!!! 9/10 times, they will just let you go. OTOH, if you were a little generous with your right wrist, or ran an infamous pop-up stop sign, a good approach is to innocently ask the cop "how much does it cost to pay the ticket right now?" If the number is too high, you might suggest "oooh, that's BAD! I'm sorry, I guess I'll need to talk to the judge"... Remember, the OFFICIAL fine is not usually all that high, so don't pay a cop more than 20 bucks or so, and ONLY if you truly did miscalculate your speed. Either way, moving violations are GENERALLY NOT a "jailable" offense in mexico (just like here), so you can relax a bit.
DO make sure you're insured in Mexico.

I would love to ride to La Fawnda on Sunday. I am headed to Glamis for Friday and Sat. Where should we meet up and when. The food is good at La Fonda we just want to make sure we miss the brunch. I dont thing they serve lobster until 5. I think the baja 1000 is next weekend so this would be the best weekend with out the race traffic. I am thinking about driving down or ride SB down to see the 1000 start in Ensanada anybody interested?

I would like to go to a nicer, quieter place where we can just park our bikes in plain sight of eating! How is La Fonda?
grimfandango
11-08-2006, 09:12 PM
its not in "plain" sight of eating.. the dining area overlooks the beach...
its nice and quiet there though..
the parking area is outside a courtyard, through the courtyard is where the dining area is (outdoor patio). you'll be hard pressed to find a nicer place.
when i go to eat there, we take turns checking up on the cars/bikes. so far no incident. Usually someone goes and checks the vehicles once every 5-10 minutes or so.
usually works out...

Make sure you get Mexican insurance! Your regular US insurance policy won't cover anything that happens in Mexico, be it a theft or accident. I'd recommend getting insurance from AAA, rather than one of the sketchy "Mex Insur" huts that are down by the border. Can't imagine making an insurance claim would be very fun. There's a AAA in Chula Vista you could stop in at on the way down there.
Be safe, have fun, and enjoy the food!

I think you'll find good deals if you stray away from bigger resturants. La Fonda was a little pricey for me considering the fact I was expecting a good cheap meal in Mexico. You'll find the best food and deals down by the beach, and at random shops walking along the city streets. Rosarito had 4 taco's and a beer for $5.00. Just my 2 cents for next time.

definitely resorts and places made for Americans are gonna be more expensive, even maybe as expensive as a place here, just cuz they're expecting americans with money. if you want a good, cheap place, you have to go where the locals go.
