So what RPMs do you guys usually hold steady at? My car redlines at 7000 and I keep it around 4000-4500 RPM. A little more than half. I figure its different for a bike though, or should I hold it around 7000-8000 RPMs on the bike too? Help a newbie out...

depends on what bike and how you ride. My bike redlines at 10.5 and it pretty much stays at 9 or above, but my bike pretty much only sees the track.

mine redlines i think at 15.5 or so and i usually shift between 6 if im goin easy and 8 or 9 if i want to hear the high pitched noise. really up to you and how you want to ride. these things were ment to be pushed, just remember if you run it hard probably a good idea to change the fluids more often

My bike redlines at 15.5k RPM so...Cruising - I keep it between 6k and 8k RPM. When I need speed - 8k and 12k RPM. When I'm bored or on the track - between 9k and wherever rev limiter hits.
Most importantly, keep it at an RPM that you are comfortable with and where you have power when you need to get out of a hairy situation (you don't want to be in the wrong gear).

for most highway speeds, you'll find your "cruising" rpms will be between 5 and 6500. this encompasses about 85% of bikes on the road. 500cc and below will be slightly higher in the band. gearing affects this also.

Redline at 13.5
I normal shift aroung 9k.
Hold steady around 5-6k. Anything higher than that is too twitchy for my tastes.
The exception is lane splitting. I usually ride it a little higher (first gear ~8-9k) so that I have power on tap in case I need it.
