One word, Hyosung
For those looking for that cheap, light, fuel effiecient, low seat height sportbike, all I can say is for a couple hundred more (the website differs from the brochure that I got at the motorcycle show), the Hyosung GT250R looks pimp and has a good amount of quality parts. Here's some of the stats...
It's got a 250cc v-twin vs inline 4
Fuel Injected vs Carbed
Inverted forks
Digital speedo, analog tach
Projector headlights
330.7 lbs dry (30 lbs heavier and the EX)
Seat height 30.7in versus 29.3 (but it felt the same when I sat on it)
17in wheels
Oh, and it actually looks like a sport bike with clip-ons that make you feel like you're riding a sport bike.
Haven't actually ridden it and I have no idea what the reliability is but it has some trick components and for those looking for that "sport bike" but aren't comfortable with only 2 toes on the ground at a stop, this bike looks like a decent option as opposed to the EX250.
I saw it at the Motcycle Show in San Mateo and was pleasantly surprised at what it offered (on paper at least) and how it looked. Overall, just a lot cleaner and more updated than the EX250s current style. Performance between the two is yet to be determined but the EX does rock the 6 speed and the GT250R is only a 5. While I'm not bagging on the EX250 as it is a proven bike, if you can get over the fact that Hyosung is Korean, maybe this is another option. Just some food for thought.

Awww smack. If that be the case it is competing with more than the likes of the 250 price wise and sadly it will lose miserably to say an SV.

Looks like it's about $3700 for the 250...
Quite interesting - makes me want to go up to Ontario and check it out - I've been looking for a little commuter bike anyway, but wanted to keep that sporty look.

What about the Derbi 125? Dunno if they are street legal or not....

Sweet looking bike (the Derbi)... but I need something freeway legal to commute on.

Just go for the Kawi. Sure, it may not look as updated as the Hyosung, but they haven't really changed since the early '90s, so it must work. I owened one for a little while, and it will cruise nicely along with SD freeway traffic. Plus, the thing was about indestructable!

I'm still considering the Kawi.. but not a huge fan of the upright seating position. I may go with that though (or an SV as others have suggested), for simplicity's sake. I'm already having a hard enough time finding parts for the Daytona - I'm worried I'd have the same problem with a Korean model.

DRZ400SM would make an ok commuter; not the greatest on the freeway but rips it up in the twisties... Firetrails become viable commuting roads, too ;) And there are lots oc ehap used ones out there from people upgrading to *real* supermotos ;)

I want one. For anyone who wants to learn and still wants that aggressive feel and look of a larger sportbike.

the derbi is a 2-stroke I think
the hyosung looks good and may attract more beginners to start on a 250 rather than avoid it since there are many don't like the dated looks of the ex250

Can't vouch for the 250, but my first bike was an EX500. I loved it! Plenty of low end torque, good riding position, and it felt very "flickable" even though the stats might indicate otherwise. All things considered, it was an excellent all around bike.

Are these bikes the same as the UM bikes? I'm rubbing my eyes and I can't tell the difference. The specs are not the same with their 250 weighing in at a portly 390 dry:

They have a starter SM also:

Love the URL "...motodp2"

Looks identical but the GT250R doesn't have adjustable rearsets. Pegs look like the EX250 rearsets or something on a F2 on the hyosung.

Exactly the same (except better color options I think.) Badge engineering at its finest, and a way for Hyosung to get more dealers now since UM already has a few (very few, but a few.)
I checked out the gt250 (unfaired) at NC HOM a while back when they were considering being a dealer. When I first sat on it I didn't realize it was a 250. It's not a small bike like the ninjette, which is both a good and a bad thing, depending on who you ask. When it was first designed they wanted the 250 and the 650 to use the same frame but that didn't work out. Nevertheless they're about the same size. It will be down on power to the ninjette, and have more weight. But it also has a much better suspension, better rubber, and looks a hell of a lot better. Directly comparing the two their Korean build quality is on par if not better than the Thailand built Ninjette.
And for those talking about Derbi, forget them. When Piaggio bought them out they dissapeared.

$3600 for that bike doesn't seem too bad, nice looking as well
On cycletrader Fun Bike Center lists the full UM line, but they aren't listed as a dealer on UMs site. I'll have to give them a call. I'd like to check out the fully faired version.
[edit] ads not theirs, it has a typo.

Hyosung has a San Diego Dealer now!!!
UM has a dealer here now too.
