View Full Version : Keeping the Revs low

So for the purposes of saving gas, I now try and keep the revs low on both my bike and car. However, I was wondering if there is a point where keeping you revs too low actually becomes damaging to the engine. I'm not talking the point where you can feel the engine really starts to chug like it's about to die (like that feeling that you get when the car starts rocking back and forth b/c you popped the clutch out too fast when just learning to drive) but especially in a car, when you get the low rumbling sound of the engine because you've got the revs at around 2k. Is that a bad thing?

I think it's not really the keeping the revs low factor to save gas, it's more like maintaining a constant speed. I try to minimize on the hard breaking, redlining, stop and go traffic, etc.

yeah I agree with arnold, but I think if you get to close to bogging your engine then you might run in to getting junked up carbs or throttle bodies....want to keep those revs more or less in the middle of the rev range. Thats just my uneducated opinion

just suck it up and rev the piss out of it,.....i didnt buy an r1 to save gas


btw i avg 33 but once i followed my parents to bakersfield from sd and we went so slow i got 55mpg

At the upper RPM on my bike, it will drink gas like I drink beer :eek: .

I've also heard that lower RPM's make the bike easier to turn (less force directional force or something from the motor spinning faster). Can anyone confirm that?

with the pistons moving less, there will probably be less gyroscopic effects on the bike, thus allow it to turn easier...
