Well, today I woke up feeling pretty good. Made breakfast, put on my leathers, checked my tire pressure, and then started out for Pally. I going to meeting up with Typer10, Coronagolf and Flare.
We all met up at the bottom after making a couple runs individually, said hello and started back up. I followed Typer, Corona behind me, and Flare in the back.
We were at the last tight left turn before the big turnout. I don't know what happened here but while I was in the turn I felt the need to press a little harder to the left. When I did this my rear end slid out on me and I went "Crap" it kinda caught and I still had a little traction, then slid out again. I feel something solid scraping and all of a sudden the rear catches again and I'm upright, riding fairly straight, and my eyes looked like this :holymoly:
I don't know how I kept it up. On a pucker factor from 1 to 10 this is the closest to 10 I'll ever get.
I went back to analyze the turn and try and figure out what happened. Coronagolf thinks I tapped the brakes. I'm about 99% certain I didn't do this.
I think I may have hit one of the old spots where the double-yellow reflectors used to be. Or I might have hit a crack near the double yellow that could have caused the skid. I don't really know.
So I scraped the crap out of my left knee puck, my left frame slider (nothing else, strangely enough) did a lowside/near highside all at once, and still have a bike to ride. I got really lucky on this one, and think that I'll stay away from Pally for a little while

Glad you came out with nothing more then some rash on your bike and in your pants. :)
Stay away from the DY and wild turkeys.

We didn't really notice them but we were more focused on the road and what the heck he hit! Didn't give those reflectors a thought... FROM NOW ON! If the vibe isn't there I'm staying home!!
I woke a little aprehensive of the ride, but never the less excited. On the way up Old Julian Hwy claimed my buddy. Twice. The first time he low sided left, slid into some dirt and was cool, the second time (not more than five minutes later) he low sided left again right into some more loose dirt, but this time he cracked the stater housing... He found little humor in my comment of not needing to drain his oil for the servicing we'd planned to do on it tomorrow. Moral of the story is two part, DON'T RIDE IF YOU'RE NOT FEELING IT, and RIDE TO YOUR ABILITY!! There is ALWAYS someonw faster than you, always.

+1. Being that close to the DY on a left turn is a good way to get your head taken off by a car or a truck going the other way. be careful. :)

Glad you're ok and luckly there wasn't any head on coming traffic. I say you don't need to stay away from Pally, just take it easy out there. Save the aggressive riding for the track. You'll have all the track for you to use and not some 6' wide lane and oncoming traffic.

I got pictures of everything. I got the side of my boot, circled in red, and somehow the top of the sole. The puck is pretty gnarly too, and the frame slider is the only scratch on there. Nothing else, not the mirror, the fairings, or footpegs. I couldn't believe it.

Amazing to watch unfold right in front of me!! I couldn't believe what I saw when he saved it... Good riding, saved a wierd situation. No one was riding too fast, nobody was even draggin knees!

i think it's rather odd that you say a "victim of pally" when it's more you were almost a victim of yourself"
dragging knees has little relationship with being fast.
you boys need to back it down a notch until you're smoother.
we've lost 3 sailors in a MONTH. play it cool out there

The voice of reason once again.
I have/do see alot of people that can't drag knee and they hold waaaay more lean angle at same/slower speeds because they do not hang off properly. It takes time to learn how to position yourself, and no matter what your style, you need to get your weight to the inside of the turn. Slow it down and do a track day.
Remember that the goal when trying to go fast it to keep the bike as upright as possible while still being able to navigate the turn(at a given speed, another words a turn at 80 mph at 30 degrees is superior to a 80 mph turn at 35 degrees.) Think about it!

You know, that might have had something to do with it. I felt that the pace wasn't that quick, so I didn't have a good body position. Hrm.

Cheers to that!! Makes perfect sense.

You know, I've had more close calls when I was going slow because I wasn't feeling on, and didn't have the right body position or lines, etc... If there's one thing I've learned, is that the ONE time you're on the bike and not 100%, it'll get ya! I've gotten to the point, where I've stopped 10 minutes into a ride, and said "Sorry, guys, I'm REALLY not feeling it today and I'm going home."
I can't believe you dragged a frame slider, either... That's crazy... Shame that wasn't on video! That'd be vid of the year I think!

wow, i know this is an old post but, that was only a few days after i went down at the half point, had somewhat of the same thing happen except i wasn't quite as lucky as you were. I went into the turn and it kicked up on me started to high side and saved it just low sided into the gravel (jumped off and split my knee open) ask Arnold(he was on his nice purdy new duc 1098 at the time), he knows about it, he actually rode past me while i was laid out on the ground waiting for the ambulance to pick my sorry broke butt up.
