View Full Version : Running lean

My bike has been running pretty lean since I got the MIG slip-on exhaust pipe. It is most noticable in the mid range power loss, and then picks up in the top end. After just changing my gear ratio it feels better, but obviously still running lean. I am also using 10w40 full synthetic oil. Stock uses non-synthetic 10w30. I plan on getting a power commander, but for now is there anything that I can do to keep it from running so lean?

your fuel injection should be able to compensate for the pipe. you really shouldnt be bogging in the midrange from it....maybe its your coils?
did you check you sparks to confirm?
are you blowing out white smoke?

I don't think it will automatically compensate because he doesn't have an ECU and all the sensors and such that an automobile has. An auto can adjust itself to altitude and intake/exhaust mods automatically because it has O2 sensors and all that crap your bike doesn't (some do).
Emissions testing is done in the mid-range RPM's, so most manufacturers make 'em run lean in the mid-range. When you get an exhaust system or even a can it will exaggerate that lean-ness.
I don't think there's much you can do untill you get a custom map. Maybe Bryant would know if you could use the same adjustments you would use to sych the throttle bodies to compensate. Don't think it would fix it, but might help.

Nope, not blowing out any white smoke that I'm aware of. Just bogging, and a lot of back pressure from the exhaust. It is really obvious at high RPM downshifts when I'm rev matching to slap that puppy in to a lower gear. I assumed that the bike would be able to compensate for the slip-on pipe. That is part of my line of reasoning for going slip-on instead of full system. Damn power commanders are sooooooo expensive. I have one for my car that I never even use accept for gearing, which isn't even an option on the bike:mad:!
Hope it's not the coils again, andi don't feel like I've lost enough power to be that. Could be the early stages though....What the hell should I do???

Not to be a pessimist, but I have completely stock bike, and it's bogging in the mid range (again -- had the ignition coils replaced with Mitsubishi 3 months/3,000 miles ago). :( Please keep us updated on what you do...
