View Full Version : Sprocket Question for the Track '00 R6

I finally got my bike back from the shop here on the East Coast and I've got a track day lined up at month's end.
It's a 2000 R6
I've had some engine work done while it was under the knife (ignition advancer, cams, slip-on,re-jet) and finally replaced my rebuilt rear shock with a Penske twin that could match the rebuild front forks better.
Before all this work was done I had changed my sprockets to give me more torque, but now after the rebuild there is a LOT of torque, so much so that 1st & 2nd gear roll-ons pick up the front end (which is fun).
My question . . . Should I go back to stock gearing on the bike? I know my current set up increased torque but sacrifices HP. I may not need all that torque anymore.
Here is a link to the track (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summit_Point_Motorsports_Park#Shenandoah_Circuit). - Very technical, like SOW.

Did you have a Cali bike? 15/49 is a good starting point. The bike should be able to pick the front up on acceleration in 1st and 2nd. You're probably just not used to it anymore. By the way, what cams did you put in there?

My bike is a 50 state . . . not sure of the cam profile, I'll need to check the work order at home.
Stock is 16/48 - I need to check what I got in there now but I did get the setup from BuyMoto at the old shop :) just in case a BuyMoto employee would have such info.

I'll check when I get back to the house . . . I'm fishing for starting references

My mechanic did a series of dyno runs to tune the bike but he didn't give me the sheet . . . I'll ask

You haven't really provided alot of important details. But, maybe go up a tooth or two from where you are now. If you are just doing a track day. Leave what you have on there. It is not going to make THAT much of a difference. You may find that you have to hold the gas at some points instead of shifting or that you reach a point on the front straight where you need a 7th gear. That will tell you that your gearing is too low. If you feel you have a lot of gear left on the straight, or that you don't have enough power coming out of turns, you will know that they gearing is too tall.

Yes . . . basically "Shut up and Ride!" I'm just axious since she feels so different . . . last time I rode her was SOW where I went down.
I will post up a ride report after the day . . . hope I don't need that 7th gear :)
Thanks fellas . . .

if it helps, 15/49 or 15/50 is a better setup for me at streets of willow. You kinda need that pull coming out of the bowl and the skid pad. Just get used to the bike as is until you actually NEED to replace the setup from wear.

listen to everyone here, powerban especially. But just so you know, regearing you bike does not effect the amount of horsepower or torque in any way. By regearing you are not trading horspower for torque, just changing the speed at which that power is available...

Hey bud.. sorry didn't see this post earlier. Remember that regearing only adjusts where in the rev-range your power band will be. Going from stock 16-48 to 15-50 will bring your power band lower in the rev range but what you gain in 'acceleration' at lower rpms, you sacrifice in top-end speed. One old-school trick for WSIR was to gear your bike such that you just barely touch the rev limiter at top gear when you hit the first brake marker for turn 1. As you get faster, you will find yourself hitting the rev limiter earlier when you don't want to... sometimes at that same front straight or different areas of the track.. you will then need to adjust your gearing to get you more top end where you need it, etc. THe right gearing for you often involves a sacrifice for one aspect or the other such as... having to short shift or not having to short shift, being able to get a little more drive out of turn 9 but sacrificing top end down the front straight, frequency of having to up/down shift throughout the track, etc.
Something that Rich Alexander once told me is to not be afraid to keep your bike in the upper rev range. Let the engine scream (just don't peg the rev limiter)... you can hold tighter lines that way, front will not push as much in a corner and you get better drives out of corners cuz you are in the power-band.
Kenny Kopecky was running 15-47 on his R6. I ran a 15-49 on mine.
Hope this helps ya bud. There's really no magic gear ratio.. it's something you'll have to play around with and see what fits you best.

Thanks guys . . . I'll run what I got this weekend and I'll have your input for reference since I'll be tweaking.
I only wish I was still out West so I could keep riding thru winter but this is the last day of the season out here near DC unless I go way south . . . dirty dirty

This is making national news, I heard about it yesterday and called my former neighbors to check on them. My prayers are with all of you, please be safe.
