View Full Version : riding with passengers?
In the three years I've been riding I've never had a passenger. I've carried a lot of heavy stuff on the back, but never anything alive or otherwise capable of panicing and making the whole situation go to hell. But I just got my first request... Any tips? Also, my riding style has me hanging off the bike, but I'm not sure if I should still do it and have her lean with me or not.

Hmmm.....it really depends on the girl. I've heard stories of girls flipping out going straight at 30 mph, or girls just having a blast. I would suggest a test run first. Maybe a really short distance to a gas station or something, then stop and ask if they're okay or how they're handling it. It helps to go over some signals first (slow down, stop, pull over, speed up...)because it's not so easily done with a helmet on.
Don't hang off the bike....you are talking about the Vespa right? Just take it easy until after you've had a chance to ride for a short and communication. Of course don't tell them to sit stiff as a board. Passengers have to lean over the shoulder in which the bike is turning into, and it should be a smooth transition. (I hope I worded that correctly.)

best words of advice...don't try and show off to them...esp. if its a girl! You'll get scratched and pinched until you're bloody and have bruises!! Ask me how I know...
You say that like its a bad thing!

haha...its the worst when you're trying to take a corner faster...got the proper form, nice lean angle, looking through the turn, then suddenly there's this sharp stabbing pain in your back. 5 finger ripping you a new one.
Then there's after the ride..."You're crazy! You're trying to kill me"
good memories!

Just take it easy to begin with. Don't show off. It's one thing to do crazy things on a bike on your own let alone with a life that's in your hands when you've got a passenger.

Have a talk with your passenger and explain the rules is #1 for me... Tell them DO NOT PUT YOUR FEET DOWN, get on and off only when you tell them, hold on, move WITH me and NOT against me.
work out a signal if they freak out or need you to stop for any reason, i.e. tap my leg three times.
And the obvious; back it down a notch, give yourself more room to stop.

tell them the most dangerous/wobbly is when you're going slow, so try not to shift weight at slow speeds. my pet peeve is the helmet clunk, although it's not always avoidable. and i totally agree, try not to pick someone who's going to freak out.:squid:

+1 on what Dissident said. Your bikes handling will be effected with a passenger.

Once their on the bike, tell them to hold on for their life. Do a small burnout and then take off full speed. hahahaha. jp. Seriously though, no matter how many rules you have, you will never really know what type of passenger they are until you're on the road. So, just take it slow.
