To what level of maintenance are we talking here? I've got at least one set of forks that need rebuilding... and a bike to put back together but it won't be ready in time:(

Date: Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007
Time:11am - 5ish or whenever you're done with what you're doing.
Location: Ian's (Erik/Queena's)House
10177 Ambassador Avenue
(http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=10177+Ambassador+Avenue,+san+diego,+ca&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=33.214763,58.974609&ie=UTF8&ll=32.903965,-117.146959&spn=0.008593,0.014398&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1) (Rain or shine since we'll be in the garage)

What to expect:
We're planning to bbq and have some chili dogs for those of you who would like to come watch, hang out, or work on your own bikes. Feel free to bring anything else you would like to contribute..(chips, dip, non-alcoholic beverages [are we making this an official UCSD event?])

We will try to provide front and rear stands for those of you that request it. First come first serve basis of course since we're limited. Oil pans, stands, tools (to some extent) will be provided so just post up and let us know what you're looking to do, and what you will need, or help provide.

We're looking at simple stuff that other people would like to learn how to do for themselves (oil change, chain sprocket install, rear or front wheel removal, break fluid) and will also have our go-to-guys for more complex maintenance (fork oil, fork seals, etc..) that you want to try to tackle yourselves.

Also, if you plan to do oil changes, chain or sprocket installs, etc etc..please purchase your oil filter, oil, chain, sprocket etc etc in advance at BuyMoto.com (http://www.BuyMoto.com) at their wonderful discounted price, and just mention you'll need the products before the Maintenance day, and they will do the best they can to accommodate to your needs.

For those of you Ninja 250 riders, I will be doing an oil change on my bike, so if anyone wants to learn how to do one or watch, just let me know. And Nik, for rebuild no problem, just as long as you have all that you need, I believe it should be fine.

If you have questions or suggestions, please post up.

If you even need to change your oil and know how to do it... still feel free to come on out. We have tools and somewhere else to make a mess of besides your place. Plus you can just hang out and talk and eat while you do it (maybe not simultaneously).
For anyone that wants to buy parts for this event, DON'T WAIT TO THE LAST MINUTE. It's easy to call BuyMoto.com at 1-866-789-MOTO (6686) and ask if something is in or ~ how long it would take to get it. Take 2 min. and do it on Monday from 12-5.

I sorta messed with my front caliper. It was raining brake fluid in my garage on Thanksgiving morning (yes yes.. I KNOW it's caustic!!)

Anyone interested in rebuilding a caliper? Yes yes.. I know a used caliper for GS500 is only $50. But I want to do it the FUN way!

Ian, did you get the brake line bleeder there too?

Wheeee!!! I'm off to INFINEON!!!! It's gonna be cooooold. See ya guys on TUESDAY!!!

Bring the caliper and we'll try to rebuild it. You'll have to bring the whole bike over though. Just ask your BFF to truck it over... then you can ride it home :) Do you have the rebuild kit yet and extra brake fluid? I'll bring my brake bleeder and that oil pan for you too...

what about adjusting the valves? I've never done it before, but I'd like to learn how if anyone knows how to do it on a ex250? Is this something that's not simple enough of a process for this day?

How many miles do you have on your bike? I was told that our bikes don't need valve adjustments until 16k miles, but also read every 600 miles *shrugs*. But also...it might be way too ambitious of a job, unless one of the other guys who knows or have done one before would like to chime in and show up to help a fellow rider.

Here's something to look at [Valve Adjustment] (http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/How_do_I_adjust_the_valves%3F).....read it, print it out, bring it to the maintenance day (we don't have all the tools though like the feeler tips or special measuring tool), or whatever you would like with it. And if you want to try and tackle it yourself, note the different tools that you might want to get. Also, since you're getting inside the bike, you'll have to think about getting replacement gaskets for them. I hope that answered your question.

http://www.ninja250.org/howto/barbievalves/ just for kicks.

My bike has almost 2900 miles now. I bought it with a little over 2000. I'm just afraid the previous owner didn't do the check at 500 miles. I've been at ninja250.org for a while, and everyone on there seems to be pretty serious about getting it checked at 500 miles. And then pretty frequently after that.

Hmmmm I may just have to pay a shop to do it for me the first time... Thanks for the tips though Jeanette! (I hope I got your name right)

Checking valves is a process you must do when the engine is cold. Sitting overnight is acceptable, but waiting 2-3 hrs is not, unless it's 25 degrees out (like at Infineon).

Actually getting to the valvetrain is the hardest part for simple bikes like the EX250/500 or GS500. Older tech engines (like for both of those models) generally require adjusting clearances more often than the newer bikes, and the only way you know whether your bike has clearances that change is to check it fairly regularly until you have an idea of what it is doing.

I checked my GS500's valves at 2K, 4K, 8K and then skipped to 16K, then 24K, and now it needs another adjustment (starts making more noise when they are out of spec) at roughly 34K.

They are a special-order-only item, and both of our distributors are out of stock on this item currently.

Please check back in two weeks, we should have a shipment of them direct from BFF, Inc by then.

How many miles do you have on your bike? I was told that our bikes don't need valve adjustments until 16k miles, but also read every 600 miles *shrugs*.

Usually the factories want to make sure that the valves start off correctly, and just in case something wasn't assembled correctly, but made it thru the assembly line without QC catching it, they would be able to see that at the initial 600 mile check. Most bikes can run 2X their factory-specified interval without issue, but there are some examples of each bike that can't (therefore the factory interval).

My GS has only had 2 valves move out of adjustment twice since brand-new over ~34K miles thus far. I don't baby it, but it was broken in correctly (per factory). Yamaha's YZF600R has valve check intervals of 16K. I've heard of 200K mile R6s that haven't had a valve move ever! People get a little too uptight about this stuff, in my opinion.

Ah Bob Saget!! :grr:

So I'd like to order at least 2 BFFs, one for bike night to order my coffee and hold my helmet and the other for the track to help put my bike on its rear stand and mount my tires!

Can you give me a price, shipped etc! :roflmao: :roflmao:

this is perfect, thanks fixcinater for the heads up on my thread. i know diddly about bikes, and ill def be there to watch you guys work on the 250s.

also, itd be great if someone checked out my bike to make sure nothings wrong. it was shaking a bit when i was down on camino santa fe, but it was the first time i hit 55-60, and it was windy, so i hope it was just my inexperience/light weight of the ninja.

You're welcome slowej8, feel free to bring it by Buymoto (We are just off Miramar, on Silverton/Dowdy) and one of us could check it for any obvious bad-things. Now it's probably just better if you came by the Maintenance Day (only 3 days away now!).

Shimmy/shakes can come from a lot of different things. Old (and possibly flat-spotted from sitting) tires, wrong pressure in the tires, mis-balanced or un-balanced tires, fork/front-end misalignment, gravity, wind, the amount of hunch you put into your back, massive 250cc Ninja acceleration, and lots of other goofy but entirely plausible reasons.
