Tires that will last a whole season should make racing a lot cheaper

WSMC Will Host Ninja 250 Cup Series In 2008

Kawasaki Motors Corp., USA, Advanced Kawasaki and Willow Springs Motorcycle Club will offer a Ninja 250 class for 2008.

“It’s going to be a cheap, affordable way to go racing. You’ll have to learn to ride, to carry cornering speed, or you’ll drop off the back of the pack,” says Advanced Kawasaki’s Kevin Jump. “And I’m looking to give kids a chance to learn racecraft, line selection, cornering speed, before they get on a 600.”

While all versions of the Ninja 250, Kawasaki’s venerable entry-level sport bike, will be legal for the class, the 2008 bikes will qualify for Kawasaki contingency money. Kawasaki Motors Corp. spokesman Russel Brenan says contingency amounts and depth-of-field paybacks will be announced after the first of the year.

In addition, Advanced Kawasaki, a Buena Park, California dealership, will support the class with cash payouts every month and a KLX110 motorcycle to be given away to a competitor at the end of the season, Jump says.

The motorcycles must conform to the WSMC general motorcycle requirements, with some additional restrictions designed to keep costs low.

No internal engine modifications will be allowed – no degreeing cams, no shaving heads to increase compression. The stock, unmodified airbox must be used, and while aftermarket filters will be allowed, an air filter must be used. Either pump fuel or a spec fuel will be required.

Jetting changes will be allowed, as will aftermarket exhausts, shocks, fork springs and emulators, and bodywork. The stock wiring harness must remain intact.

The series will run beginning in February with WSMC’s traditional monthly meetings on the third Sunday of the month.

I love spec classes and I'd love to race one. The prob with a 250 class on a track like Willow is that rider weight is going to play HUGE into laptimes. On a lightly technical track with high speeds and long straights a heavier rider is at a huge disadvantage. It sounds like it's going to be a learner class for younger riders.

Be interesting to see the fully kitted out '08s once companies start producing parts for them (Ohlins/Penske, etc).

It's a spec class Aaron....only stock kawasaki ninja 250s will be allowed with very minor (less than supersport) mods.

Doesn't say anything about cutting the back half of the banana seat off...

RE: tires, look into Bridgestone BT-090 or 125 GP slicks.

I wonder if the '08s are going to run away from the earlier models simply from modern aero...

Can't wait till somebody sneaks a TZ250 into that class and decimates all.

This is a spec class for 2008 Kawasaki 250's (similar to arroyo seca's spec class with the Kawi 650R). The Yammie TZ250 is a 2 stroke 250cc motor with somewhere around 70hp and the Kawi is a 4 stroke 250 with about 30hp. Completely different bikes in 2 completely different classes and you def would not be able to "sneak" a 2 stroke with about 3 times the power into the class

Re read my post, the second line.. Halfway thru my post i realized that it was only springs and emulators. I think the 2008's are going to have a major advantage here...

I already own one.. For the first few races im sure you could have fun with just tires and maybe some rigged way to get the pegs up.. Take off the center stand and all the unnecessary stuff. In for $300 bucks!

But spending 5k on a motard sounds like more fun for sure :)

Oh, glass your own bellypan, $50..

That's awesome. If I had one I would be all about racing it in this series!!! I'm just saying I wouldn't personally want to buy a new one and spend money modifying it.

I thought the contingency monies were only for the '08s? That is, unless you already own one? Was thinking of getting one for commuting.
