Hi,
Im new to the site but i was wondering if anyone here had any info on Yamaha YSR. I just got my hands on one and i want to know stuff like, if they are still able to be ridden on the street? And what kind of aftermarket stuff there is for them?

Hey James,

Welcome to the club! I have a friend who used to ride these things in France... did some pretty crazy things to them to get them to do 75+ mph!! I'll try to get him online so he can perhaps give you a few tips and tricks. ;p Where'd you pick that puppy up?

Hey guys,

I modified a lot my 50 cc in France but I'm not sure the kits would apply to the US. I used a ninja exhaust and changed the carburetor and chain with Polini kits.
Here's the kinda stuff built: http://zone103.free.fr/mob/parking2.htm

I didn't find stuff for the YSR though, on the Polini site.

But the mechanics should be the same.
First, change the exhaust. They usually are louder, but will get you about 10 more mph and look really nice. Many manufacturers to chose from, I had a ninja exhaust. Some are street legal and some are for race only. Check the noise and pollution specs.

Then, you can get some more gas in that piston. You can change the carburetor for that. No need to guess the specs, usually there are kits for particular bikes.
Now, your engine is gonna get hot. So it it's air cooled, you might want to get a liquid cooling system. I didn't go that far but i did it on friend’s bikes. It's pretty cool.

Engine aside, you can change the size of the sprockets. It will get you more speed but less power; it’s a tradeoff. If you’re racing it’s usually on a fairly leveled ground so there should be no problem. The chain would be good to change too if you’re gonna go very fast with that.

If you have an automatic transmission, check if it will handle high speeds. I’ve never seen them blow up but I had friends get transmission kits to handle better the speed of the output of the modified motor (especially if you increase carburetor size).

Lastly but no least, check your brakes. You have to make sure they won’t blow up at the speed you want to go. If you get the part number, the manufacturer would be able to provide that info.

Oh and get an appropriate helmet, but you probably figured that :).

I got my mbk to go 95kph ( stock went 55kph). I had friends that pulled it to 110kph. Fun times. The cops in France are somewhat cool about it but I don’t know about the US. Check on message boards to see what people get pulled over for. If you keep the original body, the cops will probably not notice all the mods!

Good luck!!
Steven.

I have a YSR at home in Piedmont. Bought it from my cousin who bored out the engine. Not sure what I got the speed up to since the speedo didn't have tic marks past where I was going but it was the funnest thing since swirled grits. In fact, my cousin, brother, and myself first learned to ride on YSRs (my uncle has one too) int the SF City college parking lot. Nothing like riding the 2 stroke in my quiet upper middle class surburban neighborhood in the afternoon. As for aftermarket parts, team calamari is big on YSR racing and they've got aftermarket parts, fairings, ect. ect. Although I heard they're not the friendliest of people as they're more the strictly hardcore racers. They're out there to race and nothing else as opposed to those who are out there to race but also to meet people and have a good time. But that's just hearsay so take that last statement with a grain of salt.

BTW, I blew the engine pulling my speed stunt and my brother has since blown it again I hear so it's currently out of commision at our house so with no rev limiter, be careful with it.

I actually got the bike for free. My dad is remodeling this house here in San Diego and there had been some tweeker living there and the guy had **** packed everywhere. So i was helping him take **** to the dump. I was in the basement and found it. I asked the lady about it and she said i could have it. I even got a title to it. Its got a five speed, some of the fairing is cracked where it had fell over but it looks like it hasnt been used much at all. Oh yeh it has 1372 miles on the odometer.
