First race of the day was the F40 lightweight. I was not going to put on new tires, but then I found out that the class leader had signed up, so I had to man up… Put on a fresh set of NTEC 211’s, soft compound for a bit of extra grip… Got a reasoable start and was 3rd into T1. Think I passed someone going into T3 and stayed 2nd for a lap. On the second lap I was very close to the leader coming out of T8 and when he rolled off I just kept going… Closing/passing speed was pretty amazing, started to wonder if I would make T9 but it worked out OK.. He had motor on me and passed on the front straight. Went back and forth a couple of times, kept it close but was not able to repass at the later stages of the race. Lap times were consistent in the 1:26’s the whole race (except a 27.2 on the 2nd lap). Finished 2nd, 0.6 seconds back with a best lap of 1:26.1 (set on the last lap). Had about 13 secs on the class leader in 3rd place, so I was satisfied with the result for sure. Think I've pretty much wrapped up 2nd place in the overall standings for this class.
Flipped the rear tire and went out for my second race (race 7, 600 mod prod). Got a good start and was running 3rd (started 5th) for a lap or two, then got absolutely dominated by this kid from Argentina that was using Steve Rapp’s bike… It felt like I was on a ninja 250 or something… I kept the leaders in sight and my first 3 laps were all in the mid 25’s (personal best time of 1:25.57). Felt good, but lost touch a bit in the second half of the race, laptimes dropped to mid 26’s but still finished about 9 secs ahead of 5th (13.5 secs behind 1st).
My results were good enough to get my PRO license, so now I’ll try to control the pace at the back for the Formula 1 field next month!
Parents had a great time, happy I was able to put up a good showing for them! Mom was sporting the DoubleBeez T-shirt (Theresa too!) which was awesome! As always, huge thanks to the folks that came out to support and/or race (Mom, dad, Theresa, Tech, Deathblow, Karen, Shaggy, Carol, Deno, Janell, ti2ttMatt, Dana, Jared, MelBell, Adam).
Congrats to Deathblow for dropping into the 27s (are you kidding me!)! Congrats to Adam for his first race weekend (and a couple of podium finishes!), congrats to ti2ttMatt for getting out there again (after 3 yrs of not racing), and to Sean for hanging in there after two mechanical failures then finishing 4th in the 650 superbike race!
