View Full Version : Shifting question regarding the R6

Heya guys and galls.
Got a question for you all.
I feel like the transmision in the R6 is SO much more noisy than the transmision in the FZR ever was. What I tried was changing from twofinger clutch to four finger clutch and I think it might have quieted down the clunking a little.
Can anyone tell me if shifting a "new" bike with two fingers is bad for the transmision? I normaly only use two, but if it takes four to correctly shift the R6 then I will use four.
Thanks!

Nope it is just the R6... mine does the same thing... learn it and love it :)

actually there are a few thing you really should do. first there is a big jump from 1-2, so you want to wait till the rpms are a bit higher and the clunk is less. also adjust the shift lever for optimal engagement, ie. make sure you are getting the most power and the least play as possible.
people say they the yamaha gearboxes suck, but they are supersmooth with practice. they deff. let you know if they like what you are doing or not, so keep trying and youll get that buttery smooth shift that i know the r6 is capable of

You use the clutch when you shift?
Seriously: ono_gixxer said he could hear my bike shifting 3 turns away at the track. I actually prefer this positive input -- I know the bike is in gear and not in a false neutral.
As far as clutchless upshifts: I have found the bike to be smooth if I load the shifter and blip the throttle just a little bit. But I have just started to incorporate clutchless shifting into my riding style (previously employing a 2-fingered clutch that I used very quickly).
As Casey said -- it works better at the higher RPM's (9k +). According to Roadracing World's tests: the bike's torque tops out at 12,000 RPM.

Carefull with the clutchless (speed) shifting. I have ruined a transmission by doing this. But I think it is fine if you only up shift from 2-3-4-5-6. Try not to speed shift from 1-2.

Thanks guys! I gues I just have to see this transmission as a cros-gear type thing. Makes more sound, but when it is IN it is IN.
Anyway... I have a loaded waranty untill 2010 so I gues I am good... hehe...
Thanks!

the number of fingers you use on the clutch makes no difference, just weather your timing of using the clutch and shifting gears is good. R6's are cluncky...yamaha was just tryign to throw in a small gl,itch so the other bikes could still try to keep up:-p

lol. yea dude, the R6 is my first bike, and initially i thought something was up with my shifting too. I've gotten to the point where i dont even here the 'clunks' anymore.
Scott from scottsms.com recently adjusted my clutch so i shift even smoother now. weeeeeeeeeeee!

E - maybe try a reverse shift pattern. ;-)

I am probably going to do that pretty soon.
My clutch is adjusted right according to the specs in the Manual. I am revmatching before I let the clutch back out after changing gears, but I am wondering if I should just add a little blip before downshifting, kinda like doubleclutching a car.
Still getting used to all the sounds... the cam chain... the constant chattering of the 04... lol... so much new shait!
