So I am about to change my oil and since it is my first change on the new bike (03' 636) I am wondering if you guys can tell me if there is an advantage to buying motorcyle specific oil, rather than general motor oil. Also, synthetic maybe?

I hear several different arguments on both sides of this and some feedback would be appreciated.

One last thing, I also hear there is a washable oil filter for like $100 out there, I forget the brand right now, anyways my question on that is if it's worth the price.

Thanks

What type of oil to use: http://www.hypercycles.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1361

(We use motorcycle specific oil because most of our clutches are wet... or something like that)

Good thread on oil filters:

Read this.......http://www.hypercycles.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=686&highlight=motooil

Okay, ignore like the last 3 posts. :shifty: Basically, I think it boils down to this.....Yes you're getting ripped off if you pay $12/qt for a fully synthetic motorcycle specific oil. Yes, motorcycle specific oils are better.

How many miles are on the bike??? If you're past 1,000 or 1,500, you can use synthetic oil. I would recommend Motul 5100. I use it in my 636 and like it a lot. If you get it from BuyMoto.com (http://www.buymoto.com) it's only like $5-6/qt. Cheap, but really good stuff. They're local here, so you can just drop by their shop and pick some up. I went from Mobil 1 motorcycle oil to the Motul. Couldn't be happier, or less broke. :-p Ask Bryant (Bodmaster) what he recommends for conventional oils if you're under 1,000 miles. I like the Honda oil.

I think the oil filter you're talking about is a Scott's. (LINKY (http://www.scottsperformance.com/indexmain.html)). It's $119 for the 636 according to their website. I say not worth it, plus I question long term performance on those things. I use the K&N oil filters. They're better than the stock filters and even have a bolt welded on the end so you can torque it down exact. Makes it hella EZ to get it back off, too. You can get those cheap at buymoto as well.

Click for directions to BuyMoto (http://www.buymoto.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=2)
