Was wondering if it would work since the cover gets pretty hot! Also, does oil flow around in that area... would it degrade the weld or anything?

JB Weld would work in those conditions. People use JB Weld on oil pans, radiators, etc. I used some on my car headers when I had an exhaust leak. But Jeff, to be on the safe side, I would try to find a whole new unit or even bring it to a welder and have 'em weld it the real way.
I've seen people do it before, for whatever that's worth:errf:

I've used it on a radiator before and had great success. It's the next best thing to duck tape! But like Arnold said it's probably best to replace or weld that thing.
