I'm screwed. Changing my oil tonight and tried to get the oil filter off. First of all, the nut on the filter was significantly smaller than 17mm, so the first attempt at removing spun the socket around the nut stripping it. Tried about 7 different tools, none worked.

The main problem is that it WON'T BUDGE!!! The nut is tearing off of the filter. I have a "grip wrench" with the rubber strap and that won't get it either. It just dents it from me turning it so hard. Yes I'm turning the correct way. When I put it on, I oiled the o-ring and used my torque wrench to tighten it to the spec shown on the oil filter. I did NOT oil the threads, but I never have before because they're usually covered in oil already.

Please give me suggestions!!! It's my ride to work and Fontana is this Saturday.

Just so nobody suggest something I've already tried, here's what I've done.

17mm socket - stripped
17mm spanner - stripped
hammered a 5/8" crescent wrench on the nut - stripped more
grip wrench - dents oil filter body
channel locks - began to tear nut off oil filter
hands - sore hands

I've heard of people who stab a screwdriver through the oil filter and spin it that way, but for some freakin reason it's on so tight I think it would just tear the metal casing of the filter.

Holy sh!t:red:

Try the screwdriver...I used to do it when I was like 17 workin at a jiffy lube with stubborn filters.

I've come across this with cars. Since Fram filters on cars don't have that "nut" at the end, I have, on multiple occasions:

Get a long enough screwdriver that will go through both walls of the filter. Careful not too go too far down toward the base of the filter unscrew as hard as you can.

I have successfully done it when the screwdriver has only gone through one side. I have found penetrating both sides tore less.

Start from the top and work your way down if you do get tear, just work lower. You don't want to screw yourself by starting by the base and tearing a gigantic hole that will prevent further tries.

Good luck, man! Lemme know how it goes.

get a hose clamp.. clamp it tight around the filter.. get a flat head screw driver and a hammer and position it between the screw on the hose clamp and the aluminum band of the clamp itself and tap it loose (counterclockwise of course).

That works all the time for me. Jabbing a screwdriver works too or a vise grip wrench but those can get pretty messy.

I concur, the screwdriver method works wonders. Like everyone else has mentioned, just make sure you go deep enough. For mine, I had to make multiple holes in my filter cuz I still couldn't undo it after just loseing it from the first twist.

Yup, used the screwdriver method also. Just hammer it through and twist!

phew!!! Finally got it. :lift:

Doused the edge with liquid wrench, heated filter with a propane torch, and man-handled the grip/strap wrench until it came loose. Was about to use the screwdriver, but had one last go at it. I like your idea Bryant, but I didn't have a hose clamp that large. :errf:

Thanks for all the quick replies. Each one is very much appreciated.

I still really like the K&N's though, this is the first time I've had a problem with getting a good grip on the nut. I'm stickin with 'em still. Thanks again!

When i put on oil filters, i just tighten it as much as i can by hand...I think any tighter than that isn't necessary.

 Glad you got it off and take lots of pics at Fontana if you are not too busy grinning ear to ear!!! That track is the bomb heezy!

That's what I always did, but the manual had a whole speel about "do not just torque by hand, you will never acheive the proper torque". They said you needed the proper tool and gave a really high torque value, almost 20 ft-lbs I think. I'll check later. I'm back to hand tightening though. :D

Yeah, I'm so psyched about Fontana. I'm nervous, excited, and a little scared......but I can't wait. :headbang:
