Let us set a date for a Hypercycles mainenance day. So we all can wrench on our bikes and begin Deno's trany job. I'm free on Sundays and Mondays for now so someone... (Deno, Bryant...) pick a date and we'll kick this off. :)

what did you guys find?

Aha! Mike... i think i know what the problem was on getting that oil pump assembly out. There is one dowel pin that goes into the drive gear shaft that prevented the oil pump assembly from sliding off to the side so that we could get that chain off the driver gear.
The two dowels we were trying to get out, as I originally thought, do not go all the way through and they are not tapered.. I do not believe those are what was holding the assembly in place.. it's another dowel pin that goes through the oil pump cover on the "top of it" through the dirver gear shaft... if you get a chance see if you can see if there is a third dowel pin located at the top of the oil cover.
I'll bring the service manual to your pad tomorrow.
Sean, we didn't get to closely examine the transmission yet... but as our journey into Deno's motor progressed, we found a lot of other.... shall we say... interesting discoveries?!?
Shredded metal, chunks of missing aluminum pieces, bent stuff, scoring, scratches, TONS and I mean TONS of dirt and grime EVERYWHERE and in/around carbs too! Took a while just to get the engine somewhat semi clean... this is one dirty engine I tell ya! But don't worry Deno... everything will be alright. We gonna do everything we can to get this fixed for ya!
I told everyone to call it a night after the clock passed 9pm.... my back was starting to kill me and I think we were getting a little tired. Anyway, tomorrow we will get the remaining pieces taken care of to get the lower engine case off and examine the transmission in all it's glory.

YOu can check out a few photos HERE (http://www.jusspress.com/day.php?userid=132¤tDate=20040117&imageNum=0) ... I will post them up on Hypercycles in better resolution later with captions and step-by-step so far.... nothing too exciting yet but some very interesting finds so far. Feels like we're digging through a very rewarding archaelogical dig. ;p

Hey guys looks like your knee deep into the project! Interesting pictures. Are you guys going to do anything else while you've got the engine cracked open? Keep us posted......you guys are like the Mother Teresas of Hypercycles!!!
I think we have found the problem. A little 2" spring that holds tension on the shifter snapped.
the tranny looks to be in good condition, with no major wear indicators.
 c'mon... $2.99 baby. PLEASE:pray:

Good job Mike, Bryant and Jeff(got to give you props for the pics and lighting technician) ;) Hopefully it's just a tension spring Deno! *fingers crossed* I think Sean want's his bike back! :-p I think since you got the engine apart Bryant, like what Fredo was saying, why not put some aftermarket parts in there! Graves or YEC cams, Webber Carbs, etc!
Bryant

We can try to just replace the spring alone.. but since we got the thing wide open... Mike did find that one of your shift forks was worn pretty good so figured we might as well get that replaced too. I'm going to check it out tonight and take a few pics. It's A LOT of work to split the cases and put everything back together only to find that you still have a problem with the tranny if replacing simply the spring doesn't fix it.

Bryant do you think all that dirt and stuff came from when Deno crashed at SOW?

yeah, I'm on the lookout for a shiftfork replacement. not sure how much of a wear threshhold is on that fork?

All the gaskets, spring, shift fork, glue etc. comes out to about 50-60 bucks retail. So I'll order it on thursday and we'll get this puppy finished :)
