I need to replace my tank protector (the thing that sticks onto the tank just infront of your stomach). What is the easiest way to unstick this from the tank without creating a mess?

Try using Goo Gone to remove the sticky stuff.

Concur Goo Gone works marvels, you might want to dilute it with a lil water first. Be sure and wash with mild soap and water after use in the area.

First heat it with a hair dryer or heat gun...this will loosten up the glue and most of it will come off with the protector.....then you can use goo-gone on the residue left.

A heat gun then finish up with a Goo Gone.

Will the goo gone damage the paint?

I think as long as you don't use anything abrasive to wipe the tank, and if the tank has a clearcoat on it and not just bare paint and you dilute the affected area after getting the gooey stuff off with some water, you should be fine.

I used the goo gone deal with the assistance of CJRJAM to get those stickers on the gas tank which remind you what type of gasoline your bike needs (just in case you were wondering how muhc horsepower you could get out of some diesel) off. Worked fien for me. No damage to the paint.
