hey guys/gals-

my Honda 600rr has a little over 600 miles and i wanted to know if the service manual specified 600 mile checkup is really worth it..

Ive 'heard' from some people that it's nothign but a glorified oil change.. and an expensive one at that..

just wanted to know if anyone bothered with taking it in.. Im gonna hvae to take it in for the rear brake recall..but i wanted to know if the 600 mile service was actually useful..

oh, and if i do take it in..any suggestions on a honda dealership? anywhere in san diego is fine.. im cheap, but if i have to pay, im usually reasonable about spending more money for the better service...

thanks

v.

Yup, it's something you can do on your own! Just your average everyday oil change and checking some other stuff like brakes, valves, idle, abnormal wear or tear, etc.

I took my bike to Funb*** Ctr to get the 600 mile service done just for warranty purposes. I knew it was a "glorified" oil change but I had the 5 year warranty so what the hell. Anyways I also had a slow leak on the rear tire and told them to check it out.

Well turned out that they don't patch or plug tires so I had to buy a new one. They quoted me on a price and agreed to go on with it. Come to find out, they put on a cheaper tire than what I originally had. WTF! After apologizing for the mistake, they changed it back to the original one. It's all good now, right? Hell nah! The estimate went up because they misquoted me on the tire. Damn!

When I got home, I noticed the chain adjuster bolts were loose. The alignment of the wheel was way off and I wonder if they even checked. This was definitely a piss poor job. That's the first and last time I'll be going there for any type of service.

So basically, just DIY. Save yourself the time, money and BS! Good luck!

Thanks for the comments/suggestions everyone. I think* i can pretty much handle the basic stuff.. im gonna get my brother to come by and help me with the valves though.. ive never done it, but after reading some info on the internet, it didnt look too bad..

anyways...sorry to hear about your 'service' with fun**** center.. rrdawg, it's a shame they didnt treat you better..ill definitely keep that in mind if i ever need any factory service..

but as far as dealers go what about house of motorcycles or escondido cycle center?

are either of these dealerships reasonable?

Wow, unbelievable. I took my bike there for the 600 mile service also and they did a killer job. I called in the morning, dropped it off at lunch and picked it up after work when most places wanted to keep it for 2 days. Being fairly new to riding and maintenence I thought is was worth the extra $$ for the "glorified oil change" to have it checked out the first time and make sure all the valves, seals, etc. and engine were broken in ok.

If you choose to do the maintenence yourself, make sure to torque everything to spec when you're done.

I don't doubt that they did an exceptional job changing the oil. It's hard to f*ck up an oil change. They just rushed on the service overlooking the simple stuff like adjusting the chain alignment and checking for proper chain tension. They also scratch the lip of my wheels and ripped me off on a tire.

Next time, I'm going to have to check out BuyMoto...

Just to add to a comment about un-named service place. My friend took his bike in for warranty work and when he got it back it was missing a fairing stay bolt and a fairing bolt. But they said didn't have to take off those parts? Maybe they didn't but i'd rather lose or forget something on my own ignorance not theirs. If you need help, ask around the forum...a few handy people around.

Good Luck!

You can easily do the oil change yourself. Just do an overall on the bike to make sure nothings falling off and no unusual wear.

Never take your moto to FBC! those guys blow hard. If you must take it to the dealer I'd head to House of Motorcycles first.
