View Full Version : Raising your idle......do you???

When you're at the track or it's naughty time on Palomar, does anybody raise their idle??? I was reading Will Eikenberry (way off on the last name) who is the WSIR lap record holder talk about how he raises his idle to 3K RPM's. Well saturday I tried this. 3K was waaaaayyy to high for me, at Palomar anyway. Definitely gave me the pucker factor when I rolled off expecting all this engine braking that I'm used to.

I put it to 2K and it felt soooo good. Really smoothed out cracking open the throttle and if I messed up and rolled off too quickly, the weight transition wasn't as dramatic. I think I'll try 2500RPM idle next time I hit the track.

Just wondering if any of you guys (Bryant, Shaggy, Dustin, etc...) do this. Any advice or tips about it???

I didn't think about the ramifications of it, but I do because my R6 has trouble keeping its idle (read: it dies when I pull in the clutch and the idle is too low). But yeah, it sounds like a good idea in theory?!? I'd be interested to hear what others have to say.

I've tried it Palomar, but I don't think it works well for my psychologically there, but I don't like to ride anywhere near my limits there. I think it's a good idea for the track in order to keep your rpms from dipping too low... I think I just got to get used to it.

yup, after reading about a bunch of supersport teams doing this I tried it a few trackdays ago at streets...world of difference, you really just gotta try it and get used to it to understand. I wouldn't recommend doing this at pally though...

set mine at 3k and let her rip! engine braking isn't as noticeable and it is way smoother as you crack the throttle open mid corner, right when you DON'T want catchy throttle response...

hmmm, interesting.......wonder if any twin guys do it

Yep, I do I do! Obviously only at trackdays though...! I bump mine up to around 2500, and like Shaggy said, it is nice on decel, but also helps while applying small throttle inputs in the low speed turns. Probably didn't make me any faster right away, but every little bit helps at the races, right???!!!

DO you guys just do it with the idle screw?

thats how I did it

I've actually not tried this yet myself. Mostly because if I'm ever off the throttle, it's only because i want to slow down... but when I raise the idle using that idle speed adjuster, my engine seems to want to float at a higher RPM and surges while the throttle is shut which for me means I'm not slowing down!! But mebbe that's cuz my carbs needed some TLC. Hmrmm... I think I might try that next time out.

Well some of us spend a little bit more time OFF the throttle than you do. ;) :-p

I do this in a different way. I map my FI so that there is more fuel being added at a lower throttle setting but higher RPMs. It's a little more work if you dont have a dyno - all seat of the pants. But that way you dont have to mess with the idle and you can customize it from track to track or from Palomar to GMR.

Wow ... I seriously never even thought of this... seems like a good idea... I wouldn't mind having some smooth mid corner roll on.... hmmmmm gonna try it

Jose, you gixxer is fuel injected?!? '98 and above?!?!

My question is...does this cause any prolong engine damage with the idle that high?!?

arnold..you're worried about engine damage when you keep it above 9k through most of WSIR?
