Any idea when the new 2004s come out? I've called a few places but doesnt sound like they have much of a clue yet either. A place in Ohio actually has them up on cycletrader but not sure if they have them in yet or just jumping the gun a bit.

Some of the 04's have made it to showrooms already. The R1, ZX-10R and 1000RR won't probably be on the floors till mid Feb. :(

Shhhh!!

Actually I know a couple girls who are looking to get into riding. I think that would be a cool bike to have as a 2nd bike for them, but that ugly blue color is just grating on me ;) .

These girls who are looking to ride are being told by their friends who are riders to get like R6s or CBR600RRs as their first bikes. What kind of idiots tell girls to get those bikes as their first bikes? I told them to get 250s, but they have already been brainwashed into thinking that they will look goofy on the 250, wtf?

I've had my 250 since February and glad that I got it as my first bike, know that I still need a lot of practice and have a lot to learn but want something a little bigger. Like the GS500 cause it's quite a bit lower to the ground than most, heavier than a GSXR but over an inch shorter. Like having my feet on the ground, instead of just my tiptoes. It's also quite a bit cheaper than a 600, can get a new one for the price of a used 600.

Girls will be girls! Patti wants to take the class soon and I warned her not to get a 600. She's starting to like the silver '03 SV's!

That sounds very cool! It is just my personal opinion that any of the new middleweight inline 4s are too manic for any new rider, moreso for girls since they are usually more petite than us husky guys :).

Yeah even an SV might pose a threat to her given that she hasn't rode a bike before but at the same time, Nicole rode Deno's FZR and was railing the shiet out of it and she never rode on a bike before either. But yeah that's true, some of the race replica 600's are way too much for a "some" girls and guys to start out on.

Elizabeth, what's your take on this?

Call Suzuki Corp and ask them to give you a current run of where they intend to ship the first bikes, to or have already shipped. I called and asked when I was in the market for my 04 and Yamaha was able to tell me whcih dealer they had already shipped to.

I actually checked out the SVs, the seat height and weight and set on one in the dealership and there's no way that I would have started out on one. Even with my 250 I have problems manuvering it around sometimes, like trying to get it up on a bike trailer or up my driveway w/o using the gas. Also had fun when I first got started when we rode up a hill and was turning it around to go back down, just supporting all that weight can be quite fun, couldnt imagine something that would weigh 100 lbs more than mine and not being able to put my feet down on the ground.

I think the newer SV's sit higher and wider than the previous ones. But the SV is a pretty light bike and I don't think she'll have a problem reaching the ground. I'm more concerned of her being on a bike that has too much power.

Maybe wait for the GS500 then? Having ridden Dorothy's 250, I know the futility of twisting the throttle, but it is definitely a great beginner bike. I think a GS500F or even the older version are just about perfect starter bikes.

Yeah, I don't think a new bike would be a good idea. I was planning on scooping up a used, beater bike for less than $2k!

If you don't mind me asking, how tall are you? Have you thought about shaving the seat down a little, it might make it a little more uncomfortable, or is the weight of the bike more of a factor?

5' 4 1/2" =) factoring in both the height and weight, like the GSXRs as well and they're actually quite a bit lighter than most bikes but taller

I had a friend who was 5 feet tall and bought a GSXR-1000 as his first bike! Needless to day, he had bad advice given to him from both his friends and the salesman. He did drop it twice and he actually started to learn how to ride okay, but he opted to start stunting. Unfortunately or fortunately for him, his bike was stolen. I think you would be able to handle any bike well enough with your height, but the GS500 is a good choice.

The GS500 is mechanically still the same... the just added some fairings right?

redhead4u
01-14-2004, 03:03 PM
Basicly yes.

Based on the successful GS500, Suzuki proudly introduces the 2004 Suzuki GS500F. The new GS500F blends all the reliability and performance of the original machine with an aggressive new look and feel for 2004.
The most distinctive feature of the new GS500F is its fully enclosed fairing, which provides a more aggressive appearance and sportier character. The new fairing features a pair of vertically stacked headlights that bear a striking resemblance to those on the hugely popular GSX-R1000. On either side of the bike, the new fairing incorporates two sharply styled vents feeding fresh air to the engine. Handsome custom cutouts further enhance cooling efficiency, while still showing off the attractive engine cases. Remarkable new looks aside, the new fairing also offers the GS500F rider improved wind protection for improved overall effectiveness of the motorcycle.

The GS500F is powered by a venerable yet reliable four-stroke, 487cc parallel-twin engine. Fed by dual 34mm Mikuni carburetors, the air-cooled motor is lightweight and compact with an abundance of low-rpm torque for easy riding and versatile performance. An easy-shifting six-speed transmission provides plenty of performance.

Supporting the GS500F is a black painted rigid box-section frame with a single shock suspension. A single hydraulic disc with four-piston caliper provides reliable braking in front, while a dual-piston caliper-and-disc combo is mounted out back.

Yeah see it is all about Ohio....

What dealership did you call?

I am gonna guess you called HOnda East Toledo/Maumee.... that dealership is like 15 minutes from me.

At any rate.... I think the 500 would be a good way to start. I did the R6 as my first bike and well I saw how the other half sleeps regarding that. Not that I am by any means upset about the purchase. But it was definitely something I could have probably started a bit smaller on.

Yep that's the one, they seem to have the best prices even after paying shipping out here to Cali. Sucks though cause I guess they misunderstood my question cause they dont have them yet, just taking deposits.

Yeah when I bought my R6 I was considering them as a poetential dealer. Their prices are seriously incredible. But it is all dependent on you talking ot the "right guy." They have some dude who manages their internet sales and they post heavily on cycletrader. I chose not to buy form them because in order to maintain these great prices they do not guaruntee color nor delivery date. I could just go down the street and buy the bike for about $400 more, get the color I wanted, and get it at the time I wanted. I am also unsure as to how the california thing would work out. I will definitley buy my supplies from them since they're the closest to me but I would not really want to buy a bike there. They're just shady to me.

I remember that Fun Bike and HOM were able to get some of the new bikes last year a little earlier than expected. Keep on checking over the next few weeks, I'm sure they'll get something in.

Yeah like what Allan said, try calling them daily and checking to see if the trucks came in. Have you tried Southbay Motorsports, House of Motorcycles (HOMo). Or Mike (Screwsuzukirider22) works at Pacific Motorsport-Suzuki/Kawasaki up in Oceanside. Maybe he might be able to find out when the '04's start rolling in.

Ninja 250 is an awesome bike. If you ride that on Palomar you would know exactly what a blast it could be, coz all you are doing is having fun on that thing. It helps you learn fast (in my opinion) and not worry about dropping it.

I guess anybody who owes a 250 would not want to sell it, if they could help and afford two bikes :D

But yeah sometimes you do feel the need to get a bigger bike, but hey there were quiet a lot of people up in Palomar who have seen me ride and told "I wish I had one of those", coz 250 just lets you have fun and handles GREAT!

I wish i can keep mine, but cant afford two bikes :(

Well I was sort of getting impatient cause I was thinking that Nick could use my new one until he got his fixed but I may just go ahead and wait on the GS500. I really like my 250 but just want something a little bigger, something that's not maxing out the RPMs when I'm going 100 on the highway. I found a yellow 2000 CBR that I could get out the door with helmet and gloves for $5000 but still not positive that that's what I want to do.

redhead4u
01-29-2004, 06:07 PM
I called Escondio and a few other places again and I'm being told March or April, really didnt think that I would have to wait that long. I've looked at a few different bikes but cant make up my mind what I want, want something under $5000, 2000 or newer and not too many miles. Any ideas? Are any bikes cheaper than other insurance wise?

Hey Elizabeth, have you checked out the 04 honda 599? I dunno how much they cost but I reckon it would be comparable to the gs. It's low to the ground, light, but got the street fighter styling though... I dunno if you'd be into that, but it sho looks sweeeeet. ...and it's an inline 4! (based on the f3 engine I think)

Well I think I can still use a lot of 250 potential to teach me. But I was planning to get rid of my car and have just the bike and I wanted a slightly heavier/stable bike that can hold its lane on freeway with winds blowing hard. As much fun that 250's are, they get blown all around when its windy out there and its quiet an effort to countersteer it. Besides I am so excited about a 600 :D

And I know it would be different ball game with 600 on Palomar, cant wait to explore that. I know I will take it easy and get all my leathers before hitting Palomar with teh 600 but really its exciting to explore potential

What makes the GS500 as heavy as it? For the Engine size you'd think it would be somewhat lighter. Anyone think it would be a fun track bike to build??? I was look'n as some of the 500cc ninja's and seen some people make a track bike out it.

I was checking out the weights too, it's weird cause the GS is heavier then the SV, 396 lbs compared to 372 but the seat is almost a half inch shorter than the SV. The only thing that I could find that would make a difference is that the gas tank is bigger in the GS, 5.3 gallons, almost a gallon more.
