Saw this post on another site and thought you guys should know.

Kryptonite EV Disc Lock picked with a pen!
Apparently, all barrel style locks made by Kryptonite can be opened with this method...call Kryptonite now and ask them to replace yours with a flat key style lock!

I've seen this before.

Your lock isn't useless.

The problem is that the lock isn't fully engaged.

I wrote like a 3 page post on how locks work and etc, but lost it...so here's the run down...

Make sure the lock is fully engaged before removing the key. Krypto's design allows for low tolearnces in the manufacturing process...and which, unfortunately, allows the keys to be removed without the tumblers fully engaging. This is where the problem lies. Fully engage your lock, and you'll be fine.

Simply depressing all the tumblers on a krypto lock and then turning the inner cylinder won't unlock it. That's not how we pick locks. The tumblers on a cylinder lock are like a binary combination lock. Each tumbler has either an in or out position, and one of those positions is randomly assigned the "unlocked" position. Get all 5 tumblers to into the unlocked position and the inner cylinder turns. Depressing all of the tumblers, like a bic pen does, is unlikely to be the correct combo.

What's happening is that the operator has failed to return the inner cylinder fully into the locked position and allow all the tumblers to reset back to "locked". Thus, the inner cylinder can turn freely, and this is what the bic pen does--simply turns the cylinder. Making sure the tumblers are seated and reset to "locked" by jigglling your key before you pull it out should prevent this trick from working.

Sounds like extra effort on the consumer because of a flawed design. Nowhere on my Kryptonite box does it say "jiggle key before you pull it out."

Maybe I'll just lather my key hole with a bunch of silicone or kerosene to keep it slippery.

Either that, or use my other Kryptonite lock which uses a standard key hole.
