Guys.. for your information.. this is a GOOD DEAL!

http://www.mazdarevitup.com/home/f_default.asp

Sign up for San Diego - Qualcomm Stadium

Event Information

I signed up for the following:

Event Location: Qualcomm Stadium - San Diego, CA
Event Date: 3/20/2004
Competition Group #9
Times: 9:40 AM, 10:00 AM, 11:40 AM, 12:40 PM

You may choose whichever group you wish but I think it would be cool to have you guys in groups at similar times as the one I'm in so we can all be there together. :) Hypercycles representin'!!!

Price is $40. You drive their cars (Mazda3's), on their tires and their gas!! Plus, you get professional instruction to boot! How can you beat that?! $40 folks!

Come on and join me at the party!!!!

** From Mazda Website! **

THE WHEEL DEAL

Best driver in town? Big deal. We’re talking the whole country here. Win your weekend event and we’ll send you to the National Finals at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Win that and we’ll give you your own MAZDA3.

Think of it. For just $40 you get track-time in a new Mazda, individually-timed (new this year) Skill Clinics and the kind of instruction that serious drivers pay thousands for at performance driving schools across the country.

We provide the helmet, the car, practice tracks, a competition course, instructors from CART, NASCAR and Indy, all in a fun, friendly format for just $40. Let’s see you beat that offer.

oh yeah, I forgot that I had a jockey shifter on the R6:ha:

never owned a manual car. let alone a manual sports car. The event looks like fun though. I wonder how much seat time 40 bucks buys you?

I can't drive a stick either, but the way I see it is...it's not my car, who cares about the engine, I may not win, but I'll have a good time tearing it up

Ain't nothing wrong with Corolla's! :-P

Actually, a cousin of mine is trying to fix up an 80's Corolla to race: http://img.aguto.com/2003-09-19_Marco_and_Kyoto_-_Buttonwillow/IMG_7806 (and you thought Sean's bike was old school)

WILL EVERYONE BE DRIVING THE SAME KIND OF CAR?
You bet. Although you will also get to drive a MAZDA6 in the Skill Clinics, everyone competes equally in a new MAZDA3. All cars will be equipped with automatic transmissions and we’ll be using grippy Falken tires.

CAN I TAKE A PASSENGER WITH ME WHEN I COMPETE?
Sorry, but no. You can bring anyone you want to the event, of course, but once you put your helmet on, you're on your own. You can, however, take a passenger with you at the Mazda Drive Center. Even in an RX-8!

but yea, there's a bunch of us from SDUncensored.com that are also going to the event. we're all signed up for comp group 12 and it would be awesome meeting you guys again!

our times for comp group 12 are:

it looks like most of you are running comp group 9 which runs an hour before us, but it'll give us time to chat and meet, if you guys are interested.

we'll be caravaning down to the Q in cars (definitely not as cool as bikes ^_^) so i'm sure we'll see you guys there!

Hell yeah Arnold!!
That and using the neutral position on the gears is a nice thing as well.

For you manual transmision buffs (me being one of them). IF this is a tight road course you can use the car just like a manual... you can manualy gear a automatic as you would a manual. Normal autos have at least 3 gears you can gear into.

It should still be fun though! Nice hangout sorta thing.

sworobec
02-25-2004, 12:11 AM
I would also suggest using one foot for brake and one for gas. You can go a bit faster that way, and you'll likely fade their brakes to hell.

Spencer, have you tried that method before? It's hard to drive like that. It really threw off my driving technique. Toe-to-heel would more ideal!

Bryant
02-25-2004, 11:05 AM
Isn't toe-heel for if you want to brake/blip while downshifting manual transmission cars?

Booya! One more week to go!

We all want to meet up for breakfast beforehand?

btw....left foot breaking isn't very helpful if you're trying to go fast on the street...expecially if you're not very good at it. Most people don't have the control with their left foot (they are too used to using it with the clutch)...it's either On or Off. Takes some practice. You'll probably scrub off too much speed.

and heel-toe is a downshift/stopping technique...the idea is to downshift, engine break and use the binders all at the same time...you need to modulate the throttle to keep the revs where you want them, the break so you don't lock up the tires (at least on non-abs cars) and the clutch to shift and control the power if needed.

And why am I giving you guys all this advice?!
Forget what I said...drive with one hand at the top of the wheel....left-foot break.....talk on your cell....eat your mcmuffins...

What's the deal with eating. You never eat prior to EXTREME COMPETITION!

Pssshhhaaww...

Extreme is when you have a rock face on one side, large drop-off on the other...and you're on dirt...doing 90....

The worst thing I can hit is a cone....or maybe a lightpole if I really mess up....

Hell.....I'll probably be eating WHILE I'm driving....

It's 5:40 pm and just got back from an AWESOME day @ Mazda Rev It Up @ the Q. I got there @ 11a cause my chalk talk time was 11:40. I didn't think I was gonna be there that long but there was so much to do. 3 skills clinics to attend and up to 8 practice runs, 2 scheduled competition laps, vendors, (test) drive center, mazdas, mazdas, mazdas-oh my! MazdaSpeed Miata, sweet RX-8s! Absolutely a rush! I liked the way the Mazda 3's looked on the street and after running around with them on the tracks, I'm thinking about getting one. Quite affordable and lots of pep in a compact car. They handled fairly well and the comp cars were lowered on Eibachs and had a Bosal exhaust system...nice. The best thing I like about the car is the automatic/manual sequencial shift...doesn't quite match up to a true stick shift but pretty sweet ride. Who else went? I don't know what ya all look like so I wouldn't have known if I saw you. Oh and doesn't compare to riding on 2 wheels....Oh yeah...my best time was 34.689...not too bad I guess. The pro time was 29.something. I just went to have fun anyway.

Nick and I were there along with Jeff and Greg and a few other people. We had a good time, I've decided that I suck though. Think I got the worst time ever my 1st time and got 37.9 my 2nd. We only got 2 of the skills classes since the lines was so long but did the test drive afterwards with the RX-8 6-speed, Mazda6s and Tribute and Nick drove the Miata 5 speed, all pretty sweet rides. Greg got plenty of pics so hopefully he'll be posting them soon. =)

I didn't test drive any of the other Mazda vehicles because I was pretty beat by the time I finished the comp. laps and the clinics. I sat in an RX-8 on display...I might go back Sunday to test drive some other cars. Yup, lots of fun! Tons of people registered-young, old, male, female....

Boy do I know how you feel. My face is glowing so much it's setting the curtains on fire. Good seeing you and Nick out there today. What did you guys think of the Miata? I test drove the RX-8. I tried to light up the tires but the traction control kicked in. I got the ABS to work too and was a little disconcerted by the metallic clanking sound I heard.

The timed course was pretty cool. It definitely was more fun than the Chevy event they had a month or so back. Those 3s handled a lot better than I thought they would. Makes me want to go back and push them a little harder through that first right hander. Oh, well. Next time. Anyhoo, I'll post up the pics now.

Ohh and when I got out of the car after my 1st lap I took the keys with me, poor Jeff was stuck there and couldnt go anywhere. =) You know, didnt want anyone to run off with my car.

At the control clinic, one person was driving with the wipers on, another was using their signals, and another person ran over an entire line of cones AFTER the finish line-he pulled up to staging and got lectured by one of the Pro Racers, after he pulled a cone from under the front of the car! Oh and everyone was clapping for him. What else, some hot shot gunned it from staging to the starting line and got yelled at. I did a boo boo too, just one! After the first 90degree corner after the slalom, I was at full throttle when the front started to skid and didn't lift...I ended up off the course but got back on quickly. Somehow, I managed to NOT hit any cones while I went off track...I was a bit embarassed though.

damn, what an awesome day! i also only got to 2 of the skills clinics and got a 35.993 on my second run. also went go karting with the rest of the sduncensored.com crew and we piled the family into the the MPV, cranked up the radio with full bass and the windows down, and tore up the road course!

absolutely awesome...i'm thinking about going back today!

the miata was cool it was turbo charged at really took off at abouit 4500 to 5k so much that it caught me off guard and i slowed b4 the brake test area since i didnt want to catch a tongue lashing from the marshals about pushing thier cars on the test drives

best time i layed down was a 35.5 ish but hit a cone so took a 2 second penalty

33.064....but I heard Erlend beat me out by a few tenths...:-p

I don't think I'd do this again next year....good thing it wasn't more than $40...

Too much waiting in line...not enough time in the car....2 f'n competition laps...whooptie do...

I feel sorry for the people who were expecting the "one-on-one" instruction that they promised...

Well..good way to spend a Saturday morning anyways

Looking forward to the pics Greg!

I went back to the Q today...got there @ 5:30p and watched some comp. laps then got in line to test drive the RX-8 6 speed. Luckily, there weren't a ton of people so I was able to get my lap in before they closed up shop at 6p sharp. It was an awesome ride! I'm not a big fan of the 2+2 door and the 2+2 seating but it handles great and plenty of power. Now only if they'd let us take it out on the open road... muahahahaha. Fun stuff....

Hey there...

New to the board. Thanks for the heads up about the Mazda event this weekend.

Got a 34.8 my first time and 32.6 :D (silver pin) the second time. Was in the 1:40, 2:40 group.

It would have been nice to go again... maybe next year I'll pay for 2 entries so that I could race 4 times.

Much fun for the 40.00 entry fee.
