So I crashed my Katana during finals week last quarter and I have the thing in my garage. I have not had the time to even assess as to whether or not I can fix it. All fairings, gas tank, windscreen, starter box, clip ons, brake fluid box doohickey would all need to be replaced. Also, in the hole that used to be my right side fairing, it looks like some metal piece was either ground down or snapped off. When I crashed, the bike tumbled and landed upside down against an embankment and lots of gas/oil leaked out. All of this is not healthy for a bike I am assuming. So, what I am wondering is this:

Is it worth trying to fix a '96 Katana with what I would call extensive damage, or should I sell the bike to a salvage yard for at least some cash back?

I have also been toying with the idea of removing the engine and building a gokart out of it during the summer. :D

Any ideas?

well I say that you should make it a street fighter...ditch the plastics do it naked and fix your master cylinder....I bet you that you could get back on the road for less that 100 bucks

but in all honesty ajunv I think that maybe this isnt the best hobby for you...havent you run up a bunch of tickets?

is this your first crash?

yea first crash in a year of riding...kind of a stupid crash too...still not sure how exactly it happened but whatever.

Yea, I have gotten a couple tickets, but that isnt going to keep me from riding a motorcycle.

Would you give up your hobby of designated Hypercycles postwhore if a couple people told you to shutup? I am not quite sure how this is related, but I am sure if you think hard enough something is bound to relate, or maybe it is because it is 3:30am and I just got off work...

Word! Do you know anyone who can give you an estimate? Try making a detailed report on what needs replacing on your bike, or simply try to figure out what you need to get your bike running again. It is usually alot better than you think. Maybe a several of us can come over and take a look, it would be a shame to sell it to a salvage yard when all you needed are a few parts.

hey jon dont get you katana panties all up in my biznazzz

you better check yo-self before you riggidy wreck yo-self....ooops

first thing you should do is figure out why you crashed so it doesn't happen again...
it doesn't just happen....

a good rider will know the cause of his crash cause they are aware of their surrounding environment, what they are doing, what their bike is capable of, and how their bike will react to certain inputs....

as far as the tickets go....I couldn't care less...

one crash/year...thats my pace, once again glad you're ok
;)

fix the bike get on the road and come out for a group ride....
I'll show you how to ride slow...

My crash: I was on La Jolla Village Drive and taking the freeway on ramp to the 5 North (something I have done at least 150 times) when my rear tire slid out from under me. I was doing nothing different than I normally do so I figure I hit some oil because I was looking through the turn and not watching what was actually on the surface of the street. Yea, thats half my windscreen and one of my mirrors on the left side of the on ramp...no big deal. Bike landed upside down leaning against the concrete embankment. Anyone know why this happened? I mean, the rear tire simply slid out halfway through the turn going 45-50mph.

If you guys wouldnt mind coming and taking a look at the bike, I would definitely appreciate it. I am gonna be gone all this weekend but there is no hurry. I live in Bryant's old place on Thomas Hayes Lane.

If you guys are gonna be around a week from this satruday, I dont think i am doing anything, but since you guys are kind enough to offer help I think I can try to work around your schedule :D

Thanks again!

Let me know what you need. I have some spare parts that you might be able to use with a lil fabrication.

I think I would I need a trailer because I dont think the bike is gonna run. I havent tried starting it because I dont want to hurt the engine since I am pretty sure the oil came out while the bike was upside down. but if kc1717 comes over and gives me the a-okay, i could ride it over during the maintenance day fo sho

I have no idea when the maintenance day is supposed to start. I am in LA right now and am not going to get back to SD until late afternoonish, probably 6pm or so...which is probably too late to make the maintenance day. But there is no rush...I am sportin the mountain bike to school and it isnt so bad. I can wait until next weekend since it doesnt seem like i will be getting to SD until late sunday.

Whenever you decide to have people come over and assess you bike is cool. Just leave enough heads up.
