Since our hobby includes some risks, just wondering if I could toss out the idea of someone (read: not me) organizing a class which teaches us the finer points of being the first to an emergency scene. Maybe we can get a group rate for such a class?

Yeah, first aid.
From Marc Danziger on the LA Biker list:
The whole 1st Aid thing got started when I was visiting with the Insights folks up in Washington and mentioned that I was interested in getting an EMT to deal with m/c crashes.
Holschen mentioned that he'd been the head instructor for SF medics and an EMT instructor, and that an EMT cert would be of limited usefulness, as it presupposes access to a lot of stuff you don;t usually have along with you (his exact words were something along the lines of "it teaches you which box to pull out of the ambulance").
Hence the class. He also (controversially) suggested that CPR is of limited usefulness in trauma cases, as it's v. unlikely that you'll get someone's heart to restart - it's aimed at cardiac care (i.e. heart attack). We had a long discussion on that issue...

EMT is totally different from first aid I think. EMT is a 3 month full time course (or around there) while first aid is a day or two. But I'm down to take first aid classes!

Not EMT -- people tell me you just learn which box to pull out of the ambulance. (I tried to rename the subject of this thread, but it seems to have only changed in here, not out there.) What do you guys think would be invaluable training? What training have you received? What training have you used "in the field?"

I work in the police department and have to get first aid training on a yearly basis. I have all of my booklets and such that I use for first aid training. I could ask my boss about first aid classes...how and where to sign up for them if you guys really are interested.

Jon, that would be great. The cheaper the better it seems for our club.
But if anyone out there has the money to spare... The LA Biker crowd (http://www.labiker.com) wants to see if anyone in HyperCycles would be interested in a more targeted class. Here is a good description of what the class entails: http://www.aguto.com/pages/insightclass.html
It would likely be summer or fall before we could get it together. Let me know if you are interested. Assume it would be a weekend class with a total cost in the $500 range for class ($300) and full kits ($200). We need to get at least 15 people to commit, so this is not a sure thing.
Thanks!

Red Cross offers first aid and CPR trainings throughout the year at a ton of locations. I am sure if you got a group together you could get an instructor all to yourself and then they may be able to tailor it more to your needs.
Check out redcross.org and find the chapter closest to you!

I wish. Then I wouldnt have all the problems with traffic tickets that I have. No, I am a CSO...a Rent-A-Cop if you will...but I still work out of the on-campus police department. :errf: They pay well.

haha, that works too...I get to walk around at night and walk scared little girlies to their rooms because UCSD is soooo scary at night. At least on future job applications I will stand out because my employment history will show me as an "escort" operating out of the police department. :D

I always thought saying you were emplyed as an escort was not exactly the most impressive resume builder... bu I have been wrong about these things before.

silly chuck with your distorted view on life. Just remember: drugs=good, random sex=good, people always impressed by prostitution, etc.
Back to the topic at hand. GPTECHMAN, the kind of training that we would be receiving in a first aid class, or even better a more motorcycle geared class, is not going to be very difficult I dont think. They wont be teaching us anything that requires years of experience to conquer or anything. You really just need to pay attention to learn what to do. There are a lot of different steps and stuff to memorize, but a lot of it is common sense. Also, during the training, they give you booklets and other little goodies that will show you what to do in case your brain farted and you forgot what to do. These booklets are small enough to fit in your backpack if you want to take them on a ride or such. I think that a class that is geared more towards the kinds of injuries we will encounter on the road would be a lot more beneficial than a regular first aid class, but the first aid class is still a lot better than nothing.
