ah... i miss the dragon...
as for your question... you do the math....
pally fast side: approx 6 miles.... 67 turns..
dragon: 11 miles... 311 turns..
so in short.. the dragon makes pally look like a telegraph road...
but you can ride pally way 12 months a year...

311 turns in 11 miles is just too much. you can try to rail wynola road all you want and say that it has a gajillion turns but the fact is that that palomar is just the right amount of turns....and more and you are running double yellows as they do at Deal's or go ridiculously slow...I say the score is
Palomar: 1
Deal's: 0

Ok here’s my view on Deal’s Gap versus Palomar Mountain. I honestly was not impressed with the dragon’s tail. Bear in mind, I did have really high expectations going onto this thing. They just were not met.
The thing was too tight. Too tight to the point where I do not see how anyone could carry any shall we say “testosterone appeasing” speed through it. Everything I saw was tap and go as far as knee dragging would have been concerned (not that I am the knee drag pro himself but...) I made 4 down and 4 up passes of this thing (that was 80 miles and about 5 hours of time on this thing including stops and chatting). In that time frame I got passed twice. I got passed on my first trip down and first trip up. I get passed two times every turn at Palomar…. except by Sean. Even better the first guy that passed me had to swing into the oncoming traffic lane just to make the next turn… that in my book is just a serious no no. I almost head on collided with a GSXR… not that this hasn’t happened at Palomar but damn I had only been only this thing for one day. I sat in a couple of different turns that I liked and watched people. I would say the overwhelming majority of the faster riders were violating the street smart rule of treat the double yellow as a wall unless you are in a passing situation, thereby swinging into oncoming traffic just to set up for turns…. Again too tight.
At the top of this thing the Mother’s Kitchen equivalent is closer to track… there are pits that you can rent complete with hotel rooms and the Dragon Diner, or something like that, immediately to its right. This made US RT 129 more abused in my opinion than Palomar is. Tlak about hitting a road with a race track mentality. Boo.
In it’s defense… if you are a chicane addict then you will LOVE THIS… it is fun in that you slam left then slam right…. And th epics of the riders I have listed above is actually on a turn where one side of the double yellow has different camber than the other side of the double yellow…. It is really really trippy… wanderer… back me up on that!
How could Palomar be any better? Palomar’s tight side so urban legend has it was purpose built to transport the observatory telescope’s mirror. Therefore a good share of the turns follow a constantly increasing or constantly decreasing radii. When you ride it you set up for a turn and you are in a single turn for a few seconds…. I can’t think of one instance on the dragon’s tail where you hung out in a single turn for a comparable length of time. … I agree with Sean on the Wynola analogy…
Palomar: +2
Dragon: 0
