Bryant, are you looking for a 125, 250, two stroke or four stroke? Maybe Sworbec can help located a fairly cheap, low hrs one!

Anything that won't put me to sleep i guess. heheh...

I think a 125 two-smoker would be fine! I hear the TT-R's are real fun to ride too though... even a TT-R125 to do some flat-tracking with?? Basically just want something to use to train with while I'm away from the racetrack. 4 stroke motors I would think might be a bit more reliable than 2-stroke... but I'm no pro with these dirt bikes so yeha... any advice is definately welcome!

I'm trying to budget around $1200 or less for a dirtbike that is no older than 6 years of age... ?? Can it be done?

Possible Bryant! But especially when dealing with 2 strokes and the amount of hrs ridden on it, it's very hard to find a reliable one. If you're gonna keep it in the fam and go for the "BIG Y" then I say a YZ125 would be perfect. Did a quick search:

Hmm...decisions, decisions.

Well...it seems to me that for your basic trail riding and such, you'll want to get a four stroke, as they aren't as finicky when it comes to going fast and slow and lugging the engine and whatnot. Two-strokes are really not very good for trail riding, as they eat gas like crazy, and the newer 2-strokes have tiny little tanks.

As for 125 2-strokes for trail riding...just say NO!

My suggestion would be to get an XR 400, or perhaps a Yamaha WR of some sort. The XRs are really great bikes, and are a lot of fun to slide around and go fast on. Jumping isn't their strongest point, as the suspension is somewhat soft (for trail riding, of course), but this can easily be remedied. If you intend to race on a track rather frequently and ride trail, I'd suggest a Yamaha WR or YZF 4xx series. They upped the displacement of the Yamaha from 426 to 450, so the 426's may be quite a bit cheaper now. The WR enduro version differs from the MX YZF because of it's 2.6 gallon tank, 5-speed (instead of 4) transmission, and electric start, all good things to have for trail riding (but don't let the lack of a kick-start on a bike discourage you).

As for price...well, an XR 400 from '99 and up will usually run about 2900+. A good price considering that bike will last a billion years, and you can make it go really freaking fast if you put some money into it.

I did some searching for the WR and YZF, and they aren't very common, seemingly because they haven't been available for all that long (I think around 5-6 years...maybe more). The price for a 2000-1 model hovers around $3500-$4500.

Of course, I practically ignored the fact that you want to buy a bike for $1200...heh. I don't really see this happening, primarily because the year/price range you were aiming for seems a bit unlikely. You can certainly get bikes for $1200, but I don't know how old or what condition they'd be in.

Personally, I wouldn't go with a 125-250 four stroke anyway, (except for maybe a WR/YZF version), as it could get fairly boring once you got good enough (I recall someone said something like this about 250cc streetbikes). A 400 4-stroke or 250 2-stroke would keep you happier for a much longer time. All of my friends who have had 125's eventually got fast enough to where they were abusing the bike from running it flat out all the time. But do note that an XR250 or TTR250 4-stroke mill about the mid to high $2000 range for a '98 on up...a bit cheaper, it seems.

Yes...well...I'm outta info for now. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask for clarification. =) I'll keep an eye out for any locals selling a dirt bike.
