hi all sorry my first post had to be a cry for help but thats what this is boiling down to
some may have read in another thread i dumped my bike this weekend (im the b/f of redhead4u) and now im going to need to get it fixed but i dont want to put the claim on my insurance
from what i can tell the damage is mostly cosmetic although it wont start but i think its just a blown fuse or something of that nature - it wont turn on the fuel pump when i flip the starter switch nor will the starter engage when i hit the button so the right side bar is dead the everything electrical works on the left side (the side i went down on)
every piece of fairing needs replaced to make it look new as well as the cluth/engine cover on the left side - the fairing stay in the front needs to be replaced as it got bent when i dumped - all the signals are intact the head light still works although its scratched a bit - it also needs a new shift lever i think my foot took it off or at least thats how my foot feels right now
i can get parts fairly cheap thankfully as i have an "at cost" coupon from where i bought the bike from and my brothers friends father (roomates cousins uncle knows a guy who knows a guy) works for suzuki - i just need someone who does this for a living or has alot of exp. with it to help with the work - i am not trying to ask for handouts as that is not my style i am fully willing to compensate any help (i usually pay in beer=)) i would like to get it running again first and i can get new fairings at a later time
thanks to everyone for reading my rather longwinded post
Nick
ps everyone keeps telling me how lucky i am to have walked away with only a rashed knee and some bruises but all i care about is what i did to my bike and getting it back to new again ASAP is that normal?

Sorry to hear about your crash. Nobody wants to experience, but it's best to be prepared for when it does. Well by reading your post, it seems like it is cosmetic and can be fixed. Since GSXR's are so popular, your best bet is to check on Ebay. I helped Errol(GSXR57SD) remove and install his forks (had to strip the whole front end out) and has bought a lot of stuff for his 750 through Ebizzle!
Maybe try posting a maintaince day with pics of the damage, so we know what we're working with before hand.

the more i sit and think the more i think of to post
i think to get it back on the road the upper and the fairing stay are a must i can ride with the seat fairing scratched and remove the side fairings until such time as i can afford new(semi-new) ones and of course figuring out why it wont start and replacing the shift lever
i really want to get back on the road since Elizabeth found people for us to ride with my ultimate goal is to get it back to showroom quality like it was before i dumped it but priority is getting back on a bike - i think with as much damage to the front upper and the stay i am lucky the carbon fiber intakes didnt sustain any damage as i am sure they are super expensive to replace being that they are c/f
my brother who i was riding with at the time i layed it down was (i think) over concerned the frame might have been bent but i cant see any reason for the concern - at first glance he thought the front wheel wasnt lining up with the bars set straight but after closer inspection i think it is just because the fairing stay is bent and the upper is all out of whack
look forward to hearing from the experts here on the site and getting to know everyone in turn not to mention getting to ride with everyone since isnt that what life is all about?

i have been browsing ebay but most of the fairing i have seen is damaged as well but i guess not as bad as mine but i am still looking - also most of the stuff on there is blue/white and my bike is yellow/black (bought it since it was the less popular color and not as many around guess that one is biting me in the a$$ now)
i forgot to add the tank took a shot as well and has about a softball size dent in it
thanks for the preliminary tips/advice Arnold - i will try to get some pics up today after work

Well, if your Cousin's roommate's Uncle can discount stuff, then sweet! Once you get the fairings and fairing stay in, it should take that long to put back. Does the bike still not start? A lot of times, when a bike has been down on it's side, the engine gets flooded so it takes a while for it to start.
iceman1911
01-20-2004, 12:19 PM
no still doesnt start
heres the symptoms - turn ignition switch to on headlights come on - flip starter switch to run which normally kicks on the fuel pump but it doesnt - press starter button nothing happens i get no action from anything on the right bar but everything on the left bar works (horn, signals, high beam/low beam switch) hoping it is something like a fuse but im not getting my hopes up and i dont know enough about bikes to start blabbling about what i think is wrong with it

Sometimes the handle bars might look offset from the front wheel alignment because the forks are actually "twisted" in the triple clamps. But that's relatively easy to fix... just loosen the triple clamp bolts and allow the forks to pop back into place (if they aren't actually totally bent)...
Will post some more info soon...... if you need a hand, we have lots of folks here with experience working on motorcycles so you will be in good hands. :) I will help any chance I can get... but I've been pretty booked lately

OH HEY!!... starting issue.... I remember hearing somehting abuot a safety switch that these thign shave on them getting jammed or something when the bike is tipped over... or even worse... when you have the bike cranked over the swicth sometimes trips and shuts down the engine....
http://www.mototuneusa.com/gsxr_tip_over_switch.htm
maybe that is the problem?... worth a look anyhoo :)

Do you think it would be worth it to just claim it on the insurance? Just wondering how much this will affect our insurance rates but that's about the only way that the bike will get back into it's original condition.

I was faced with the same issue... The question to really ask is wether or not he really needs to bike to be in "just like new condition." If the answer to this is an emphatic yes then I would say insurance that thing out and call it a day.
Now just IMHO A little fairing ding here and there (or in some cases a gas tank slash  ) does not bother me to the point where I think of getting a new bike. Serious mechanical issues which will impede the bike's ability to perform... yes this is an issue... but eye sores... ehhhhh no biggie.
We seriously ride the begeezus out of these bikes and unfortunately things happen to all of us. From my experience and from watching/listening to my fellow riders I reckon that I probably have not gone down for the last time and fairings are flipping expensive. Furthermore, insurance agencies I doubtwould take too kindly to totaled motorcycles dinging up the old perfection record. What I decided to do was just deal with the gashes and keep my bike because I like it, I trust it, and it got me through my "first" crash just fine :)... not a word Sean not a word ;)

yea that is a good point but no one will look at a rashed up bike and go "DEAAAMM!!!" or maybe they would while wondering how you managed to mess it up that bad
i am not against riding it while it without fairing i guess but i like the "DEAAAMM!!!" part of riding my bike around as much as i do dragging a knee thru a turn and rolling the throttle hard coming out just to have to downshift and brake to set up for the oncoming hairpin guess maybe i have to ride for a few more years until i can expect to be able to keep a bike showroom quality and still be able to do these things without bringing it back on a trailer
i just want this one fixed and running right and i will worry about the looks at a later date i suppose

I feel ya bro...
I bought my bike because it was sick looking and it supposedly handled like a dream... and once it got deblingified.... I wanted it to be better.... I like the DEEEAMMM~!!! as well.... but I also like hitting a corner with a sicker line than I ever had before... that is the tyep of DEEEAMMMM I giv emyself... and well that's the best kind to me...

by the way does the term squid have anything to do with the term commonly used for Navy members or is it tottally different?

Have you checked that all your fuses/electricals leading from the right handle bar/clipon are connected or seated properly? Does the taillight come on when you use the front brakes?
does the engine turn over at all?
oh yea, clean up any brake fluid if any spilled out.

k, this might sound stupid. you said your shift lever broke off? and the engine won't start. i'm sure you've allready thought of this, but JUST incase, make sure the bike is not in gear.

I have a fairing stay for our gixxer. They are going for about $110 + on ebay. $85 and it's yours. Let me know...

Btw, I also have left side peg, peg bracket, rear peg, sub frame, 2 left lowers, an upper, and a tail piece, all a little scratched up. Lemme know if you wnat to come over and look at em.
iceman1911
01-20-2004, 10:22 PM
hmm ok got the bike started i can neither confirm nor deny the fact that it might have been in gear - funny tho i have started more than a few times when stalling in first by just holding the clutch down
so i have to guess the damage is mainly cosmetic but the upper and the stay definately need replacing as well as the gear shift then i can at least take it on the road and see if anything happened to the gearbox i also noticed that there is something broken behind the headlight where the upper connects like i said i dont know enuf about bikes to tell you what this is called
Mike i will prolly score that stay from you i just have to figure out what else i need but if you run into a buyer before i get at you feel free to close the deal i dont want to have you hold it and me not be able to pick it up from you for a week or so
by the way everyone feel free to call me n00b, squid or what have you for not thinking of the bike in gear thing

Lt. Nick "Goose" Bradshaw: Iceman. It's the way he flies, ice cold, no mistakes. He wears you down, you get bored--frustrated--do something stupid and he's got ya.
Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell: I'm gonna hit the brakes, he'll fly right by.
"Slider": No points for second place.
Lt. Nick "Goose" Bradshaw: Great balls of fire!
"Stinger": Your ego is writing checks your body can't cash.
Lt. Nick "Goose" Bradshaw: What are you doing?
Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell: Just wondering, who's the best?
Lt. Tom "Iceman" Kazanski: I don't like you because you're dangerous.
Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell: That's right, Ice-Man. I am dangerous.
"Slider": Who's butt did you kiss to get in here?
Lt. Nick "Goose" Bradshaw: Well, the list is long, but distinguished.
"Slider": Yeah, well, so's my Johnson.
Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell: Any of you boys seen an aircraft carrier around here.
"Stinger": You are America's best; make us proud.
Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell: I feel the need . . . the need for speed!
Lt. Nick "Goose" Bradshaw: The Defense Department regrets to inform you that your sons are dead because they were stupid.
"Stinger": Do not fire until fired upon.
Lt. Tom "Iceman" Kazanski: You can be my wingman any time.
Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell: Bullsh**. You can be mine.
LOL, Classic!

Any maintenance days scheduled in the near future? Would be great if someone could check his bike out to see what work needs to be done on it, otherwise we probably need to take it into Lee's or something and have them check it out. Need to do an oil change on my bike soon as well, would like to learn how to do it myself, otherwise going to be shelling out the hundred and something to get it done at fun bike again.

Nah don't take it to Lee's.... take the money... fix it... and leave some of the parts that you can deal wiht being messed up alone (like plastics and what not) and go buy some sato rearsets, some sick rims, new pipe, or something....
or better yet did someone say ummm some... Marchesini rims?
that is more fun anyways.... I hate paying mass money and getting no improvement!

Don't listen to him, the cold weather and snow is making see dead people. J/K
E-liz, don't bring it to Lee's especially if it's only cosmetic. Buy the fairings, fairing stay (http://www.sharkskinz.com/sales%20items.htm) <--clicky click and fix the bike yourself. Labor cost from Lee's is going be insane and it's something easy. Have Nick ride the bike to BN if possible so that we could see what we're working with.

Nick, it doesn't have to be a BN or whenever you guys get back for AZ. One of us can take a look at it since you live in MM. It's just a matter of putting on the new pieces. Lee's charges per hour and bottom line is that you could save A LOT on the labor cost and do the work yourself or a 6 pack of beer! ;)
iceman1911
02-12-2004, 01:23 PM
im sorry could you say that again the only thing i read was a 6 pack of beer =) (jk) yea when Dan came over and was helping me out i kind of realised it wasnt too terribly difficult to take apart and such - if i knew someone that did good paintjobs i found a full set of fairing plus a gas tank primed sanded and ready to paint for 1000 on tha e-bizzle so i would save a ton of $$ that way

Plastic welding can come out nice if done correctly. You should ask him to show you a sample of his work.

Joker!?! He has a red Triumph 955 right? Well if you want your bike in the stock, clean condition, go with the OEM fairings. Since you went through your ins co then, might as well buy the OEM stuff. Plus if your rashed fairings are somewhat good, you can bring them to Catalyst Composites up in San Marcos and possibly trade your rashed fairings for race body work.

Nope they won't do trade ins anymore unless you have a bike that they don't have yet. As far as all of ours are concerned, they already have em :(
