As many of you know, Hypercycles started in UCSD and is still running strong. There are a great deal of events that we have planned for 05 but we need your help to make it a reality. If you are a UCSD student, please post up! We want to hear from you!

Well for starters we hope to re-inform campus motorcyclists of the existence of Hypercycles and subsequently run an informal meeting on campus to help new members learn about the club. Create various events including:

1) Price Center Show
2) Making sure we are booths at various "club-days"
3) Creating "How to Get Into Motorcycling" Sessions
4) Three Off-Campus Meet and Greets
5) Organizing More Group Rides

and finally...

We have one year-long goal that we hope we can achieve but it will require a bit of effort and smooth-talking. For a very long time now, we have always felt that parking security for motorcycles has been less than stellar. Simply put, too many bikes are getting stolen.

We hope to start installing networked cameras to monitor one lot and also install bars onto which we can chain/secure our bikes. While Bryant and I were still in school, the technology had not yet caught up, but now the time seems right. We hope to achieve this by first getting permission, and two raising enough funds to put one 'system' up - so that the University's stinginess will not come into question. I think that at the very least, we should be able to start creating the networked camera system - which will include a website that students can log into and view the lots where the cameras are installed. Should something occur one could go back into the archives and pull up video for that day (offline).

Our overall goal is and always has been to improve rider safety, share information, and meet new friends. However, because many members are now former students, we need the aid of current students to help the club. If you have the will, and the energy, please reply!

Jae,

Security Cameras in the parking lots at UCSD is a complicated issue. Initially, the Police department was testing some equipment in one of their lots, wireless communication back to the mothership, that sort of thing... but they found the equipment to be unreliable. Since then, this project has been handed off to the UCSD Bookstore, who is the foremost Loss Prevention Specialist on campus. However, they were not satisfied with the Sony equipment that was eployed for the existing installations.

Now, parking and the University DO have long term goals of getting loss prevention equipment installed in the parking lots... HOWEVER, as I have discussed with the folks at the bookstore, the limitation here is with money and technology. Parking's plans (namely their budget) do not allow for ample equipment that is capable of providing *evidence quality* video recordings. i.e. a video of a bike being stolen does little good if all you can do is read the license plate. you need clear shots of the person, their face, etc.

I'm not really sure what you're suggesting in terms of coordinating an effort to install cameras near the bike lockups. Are you offering to donate equipment? Money? Even so, this territory is controlled by Parking, and if you've ever dealt with parking at even the customer service level, you must know that they're a bunch of buffoons.

Seeing as the UCSD bookstore has taken on the responsibility of managing the upcoming parking lot loss prevention program, in coordination with ACT Telecomm... I have a contact I could in touch with, informally, to try and get some more information about what's going on. Perhaps he can provide more information. I'm sure he'd be happy to talk to us, although I must admit he is a very difficult individual to get ahold of.

I do know that currently the focus is on ALL vehicles parked at UCSD, and I also know that currently the equipment they're asking for is WAY beyond the financial capabilities of the committee that's heading the project up. Basically the only way this might come to fruition is if you somehow negotiated to give the Bookstore monies which they would explicitly use to purchase *their choice of equipment* to be explicitly installed to monitor bike parking areas. It's a long shot, but you never know what the outcome might be, especially if this was a concerted effort backed by the well known name of HYPERCYCLES.

If you are truly determined, get in touch with me and I can see what I can do. I've worked with the Loss Prevention folks before and perhaps this could be the foot-in-the-door you're looking for. If all we accomplished was sitting down with Loss Prevention and bringing motorcycle parking safety to their attention, it might be worth it.

---

That said, there is another avenue which deserves some attention. During the dry season, there is a group of Professors, Staff, and Academia that get together for a motorcycle cruise (old fogies, so we're talking VERY low key here) around San Diego County. It might be worth it to try and garner some sympathy from this group as well, seeing as it's the closest thing to a UCSD motorcycle rider's consortium that I know of, besides Hypercycles amongst the students.

---

Give me a call during business hours if you have the chance, and perhaps we can come up with a strategy. If you couldn't tell by now, I work at UCSD.

I'm a student. I have will. And I usually have energy, but I'm pretty exhausted at the moment. In any case, I'd love to help.

I'm a student until the end of spring. i'll help out. especially for sessions aimed at getting more girls into it. you know how the parking by center hall got moved? well, now there's this little rain ditch right in front of it, and i'm never sure if i'm going to be able to get out if i park there (because my legs are so short that it's hard for me to maneuver my bike. and any dips in the road may cause a tip over). bad placement of m parking for short riders.

Shall we schedule an informal UCSD member's meeting first then? Perhaps sometime during the last week of January?
