Okay okay, last pipe question, whats the differences between high and regular? Is it just personal preference? Are there any good or bad sides to having one style vice the other? Thanks, Mike

In theory, a highmount has more bends and therefore does not "flow" as well. Sometimes highmounts cause problems when trying to ride 2 up. As far as the plus side.... They look cool, and I have heard of people dragging pipes and that should be harder to do with a high mount. In reality it is all really just matter of personal preference. The HP differences would be to small to really notice.

like cyanide said.

the hightmount pipe can sometimes get in the way. Having your boots melted onto the pipe is not uncommon.

Dang bro, how would you melt your boots unless they were plastic and you had your feet on the back pegs??? Leather doesnt melt, Gotta explain that one to me bro. The pipe runs on the inside of the passenger pegs....... . Mike

Yep, it is annoying to melt your boot/shoe on it. Especially if you have big feet, but nothing new here, just personal preference.

well not on the exhaust canister itself but on the S-bend piping that runs behind your right rearset. So if you are on the balls of your feet, like you usually are when sport riding, the heel of you boot may make contact. Most riding boots ARE plastic on the shell and sole.

then again. You may not have the same problem depending on the way you position you feet. Might as well sit on some bikes that have high mount pipes with your riding boots on and check it out first.

...

side note. Some exhaust manufacturers include a heat sheild on the piping to prevent this from being an issue. Although the sheilds usually take up even more foot space your boot wont melt.

Actually you can loose a lot of RWHP with a high mount not to mention they weigh more and usually cost more. I saw a bike run a regular mount exhaust on the dyno and made good power then he bolted on an under tail exhaust re ran the bike and lost 7 RWHP

you could always get a high exit?

yoshimura makes them

Hmmm, so whats the difference between a high exit and a high mount? I thought it was the same??? Educate me my brotha!

here is your bike with a "low mount" as arrow calls it, but I say this is pretty much standard
for this purpose assume standard

here is a "high exit" which is different from a high mount. In a high exit most likely you will lose the passenger pegs, but who cares....
essentially you can get a straigter pipe (less bends than the high mount) and more ground clearance (than the standard mount).

Here is a high mount, sorry didnt have time to find one for a gixxer 1k but you get the point. On certain pipes like mig and leo vince they have adaptors so you can keep you passenger pegs, but they may be in a wider stance on the right hand side.
Notice the bends and the passenger pegs....

Essentially for what you, we are doing it comes down to personal preference, do you need more that 150 hp? probably not, are you using 150 hp probably not. Is one ground clearance better than the other, maybe so, is there a problem with your technique or suspension if you are dragging pipe, probably.

Check out how pipes sound, I dont think you will be disappointed with a you high exit race/zyclone baffle.

Lots of good info, thanks much, I also was reading up last night, and some people were saying that you actually lose HP when you go high mount because of the curve in the pipe? I wonder if thats true...It seems like it would because the air isnt going straight, but its actually altering directions because of the pipe, what do you think? Thanks again, Mike

that really hard to say for just one bike. some bike might benifite from longer tubing, while others would not.

but on average across what ive seen, the highmounts with the same can make 3-4hp less than the low mounts when all is said and done with proper tuning.

some could gain with the extra tubing, especially in the midrange.

for me,...i would get the high exit, i personally hate the s-bend in high mount pipes becaues i wear a 14-15 shoe and you better belive that it gets in the way

It really does depend on the bike. As you can see in the pic below (it's a tamiya model, but it's accurate), HRC made a nice, big 'ol loop before the exhaust can.

So straight tubing doesn't necessarily mean more power.

(that's a rc211v engine for those who don't recognize it)
