View Full Version : Parking UCSD
Hi all, I'm a junior at UCSD. I recently bought a 2001 Gixer 600. I live off campus and I have a gated underground parking garage in my apartment complex. The thing is anyone could follow another car or person into the garage. I've been reading forums about theft around the area. I've simply become paranoid and don't want my motorcycle stolen. Does anyone have any private garages? Any suggestions? Thanks!

get a chain, and park it next to a pole, wrap that sucker up like 9 or 10 times then lock it with a huge lock. other than that, i dont know what else to say other than try to get it in your living room if you are on the bottom floor. i used to live at costa verde, and i knew a couple guys with bikes that had rotor locks on em and other "antitheft devices" and they still got lifted.
in all seriousness, try to look for off campus housing that is an actual house or townhome with a garage, thats what i ended up doing because i was as paranoid as you. i would say go for it over at my place, but we already have 4 bikes in the garage and a car, just dont have the room for it. hopefully someone else on the board lives as close as i do to school and could help you out with housing your bike.

Hey LIF, if the public can touch it, consider it HUGE risk. People have bought chains that cost upwards of $100 and it is of no avail. You should just park your bike in your apt ;). If you dont ride very often, find a friend that will let you garage it at their place. If you're desperate, I only have 2 bikes in my garage and have a 2 car garage and can accomodate you until you find a place. Of course, then you would be trusting a stranger. heh!
As far as parking at UCSD:
don't do it after dark. PERIOD.
Good luck man.

Soooo many bikes have been lifted from the apartment complexes in La Jolla... If I were living there, I'd ride a beater. Make them not want to steal the bike. Considering I'm a pretty crazy guy, I'd even consider buying some thrashed plastics and "weathering" them to make the bike look really really old. Anything to turn off a would-be thief.

anything (gixxers esp) newer than an 00 is a candidate for abduction
i agree with the weathered look for your bike...has always worked for me! hey i even left my bike alone and vulnerable 50 miles from here and 2 days later---alas...her uglyasss was still there just as i left her..lol
anywho...hope you find your bike a safe home ;)
Thanks. I'll try to keep it out of sight, and chain it around a pillar i guess. I'll probably try to wedge it against the wall and my car.
The apartment complex across from mine has a motorcycle newer than mine. doesn't seem like anything has happened to his. thanks guys. i'll haveta take my chances.
btw, captain g, are you alex and peter's housemate? 1 car, 4 bikes, sounds like there place.
where do you guys ride around here? palomar? i'm a newbie... any recommendations?

sorry bro, im roomies with a couple of other fellas, two of the bikes in the garage are mine, one is one of my roommates, and the other is a friends bike we are harboring cuz he lives in chula vista, but cant keep it at his parents house cuz they dont have any room. who are alex and pete anyway? do they post up on here? and as far as places to ride, i do whatever freeway i can just to see where it goes, telegraph or palomar for decent twisties, and where ever else those two wheels can take you.

LIF... make sure you have full coverage. It will still suck if your bike gets lifted but atleast you won't be completly assed out. If you are a newB, I wouldn't suggest Palomar just yet.
Yeah, Palomar sounds pretty hardcore. Prolly won't do that anytime soon.
Full coverage is like $2500! That's totally out of my range. I can only afford liability... unless anyone has any other insurance suggestions. Thanks Cyanide.
Does most of the SD chapter in hypercycles know each other? Do you guys go out n ride together?
Peter and Alex are friends of mine that live in a house around UCSD. They house 4, 5 bikes and a car. I just thought you might be one of them, Caption G. I don't think they post here.

yeah, hey LIF, how bad is your driving record? i know mine is full of speeding tickets and a license suspension, thats why full coverage for me would be about that high. who do you have as you insurer?

Parking at UCSD sucks...My bike got jacked along with my buddies one night at the lot next to the cashiers....in a span of 40 minutes...I also had a buddy that had two (2) GSXR1k stolen from his underground parking lot (or whatever those things are)....then a week after mine got stolen...another Gsxr got yanked from Gilman Structure and he just had liability......Insurance shop around...try State Farm as I have them and pay 400 bucks a year for full coverage even woth my first bike getting yanked...
Alot of us went to UCSD and still hang with each other...just come to the track day and you will see a ton of UCSD alum and current students...as this organization was intended and is a UCSD club.....now someone get cracking on the next PC show!!

Parking at UCSD: sux ass, my lid got jacked yesterday and I get a feeling of relief everytime i walk into gilman and see it still there. I actually just raised my insurance on it yesterday too after my helmet theft to full coverage, its worth it here. I also live in La Jolla and when I was looking for a place, a requirement was a garage! Might have room openings for 05/06 school year if u want a condo with garage
Dude, everyone on these forums are so chill. that's awesome.
captain g, i've never been insured before. i have a car that under my sister's insurance. i've only been riding for a month now. i guess it'd cost that much caz i've never been insured. i just got a speeding ticket in my car around magic mtn outside LA... so that can't help.
speedster: when/where's track day? i'll give state farm a call. thanks! what apartment complex was ur friend's place where he got his bike stolen from underground? i hope i don't live there.

haha you said "magic mountain just outside LA" like we didnt know where it was, thats awesome! nah man, i dont know anyone who doesnt know where valencia is because of that place. im from LA anyway, not originally from SD, and come summer time, we should get a trip going to go take that place over hypercycles style. anyway, now i understand your insurance dilemma, sorry about that bro, but do what speedster sez, and shop around a bit, you will find much cheaper insurance that will be full coverage. good luck!

My girlfriend used to live at Nobel Court and my 2003 R1 got lifted there. Really close to the I-5; great place to steal bikes. Just get full coverage if you can and be cautious to where you park it.

For the amount they charge to park at UCSD, they should get their sh*t together and work on this theft thing. I hate worrying about my bike when Im in class.

I park my bike in the Gilman structure and chain it to the pipes on the wall. When my bike is sitting with 10 other bikes and none of the others are chained, it's a lot less likely for them to steal my bike. Thieves like paths of least resistance. But I do know that if someone wants your bike, they'll find a way to get it. :errf:

They should put rails or pipes right in front of financial aid so we can chain our bikes there, out in the open. That way in an open view parking lot, it will be really obvious if there's a truck parked next to trying to life a chained bike....

This thread is less than encouraging, as I'm starting at UCSD. The last thing I want to worry about is someone stealing my bike.

Do not park your bike outside in La Jolla. That goes for gated apt complexes also, even if they have security guards...

hahah true true, but its the cold, hard truth. Its also a risk many are willing to accept. i used to live around Clairemont area at an apartment complex. i used to park it nudged in between my roommate's cars. A few months later a neighbor of mine in the same complex who had an 02 R1 had his stolen. He parked the same way my bike was, and somebody just rolled it on out......
Not soon after I moved to a house with a garage. = )
I do late night research and experiments at the labs here @ UCSD so I am ALWAYS paranoid about my baby. I try to park it in places where not many people frequent (unlike the price center or gilman parking areas) with the wheel lock on, a disc lock, and an alarm. Sometime after 6 or 7pm I bring my bike and park it on a sidewalk outside the building of my lab.....Not that I'm encouraging you to do the same! but it goes to show how alot of people on this forum go to great lengths in protecting bikes. Take care of yours......and get the full coverage!!! Its worth it every step of the way!
