Hey HC-ers,
I was pulled over yesterday in UCSD by East parking lot. I was "splitting" in the bike lane and the officer was in the East parking lot. He immediately lit up so I just pulled over into north parking and waited for his arrival. Turned off my bike immediately and took off my gear in a non threatening manner.
He asked me what did I do wrong. I responded with a very polite "lane sharing sir?" He says "maaaaybe." Told me I was going too fast for his comfort and if I was going slower, he would have let me slide. Asked for my info and I proceeded to retreive it. In the meantime he is running my plates, etc. I give him my license(still reaching for reg/ins) and he asks me if I have ever been warned. I tell him that I've never been pulled over before at all. He goes and verifies that bit of info. Then calls me over to his car and tells me I get a warning! SWEET. My 1st experience with a cop and it went really well. :guitar: :guitar: :guitar:
Gave me a warning for riding in the bike lane. Told me to slow down etc. Officer J. Smith #620 ROCKS!!

was it a campus officer? thats amazing cuz they bust bicyclist all the time for blowing stopsigns, so i would have figured for sure you would have gotten a ticket for riding in the bike lane. but thats awesome you didnt!

"He immediately lit up so I just pulled over into north parking and waited for his arrival." OOPS. I meant Regents parking lot.
Yea I heard those campus cops are tough. I'm glad I got one that gave me a little breathing room... :)

ha I got pulled over by SDPD. He tried to act like he had a reason. I was coming up behind him and he turned right and waited for me to turn right. I waited like 2 minutes and he didnt budge. So I knew he was gonna light me up. I went and BAAM he lit me up. So yeah I showed him my stuff and crap and hes like "Ill let you slide for not displaying your registration". LOL Funny, cant write me up for that. LOL. I was talking to him so much he forgot to verify if I had insurance. Pretty much he knew it was a bogus stop thats why he didnt bother too much. Plus after I told him who I was, well that shook things up a bit. :rifle:

i got out of a ticket the other week for going 120+ .
he let me go because a cager swerved off the road to tell the officer about some lady that cut him off ( while nearly causing a huge pile up himself trying to get over 3 lanes to the side so fast)
simply told me that at least i was being safer that that guy, and said to ride safe.
he was a bike cop, big black guy with a mustash and very nice.
thats the only time ive stopped and been pulled over on the bike.
totally my fault, wasnt looking for cops at all, i was checking red line speed in third for a gearing compare.

Sounds like the UCSD cops need to patrol parking lots instead of stop signs. Seems to me that theft runs rampant around that area.

always a good idea,...i pull the key out, and hold it up in the air, then slowly step off the bike. then ask if i can remove my helmet.
and when they ask for licence ect....i inform them first,..."its im the brest pocket of my jacket sir, could i please set down my helmet and take my gloves off so that it would be easier for me to retrive."

JC, thats a good point, just turn the bike off... thats all they want, that and the helmet off
but time for a wicked story... i was up near diamond bar with my group at the time(like a year ago) and i just got my dampner on so i was like just weaving inside my lane, not like drunk weave, but you could tell i was messin around... (no i was not under the influence) so i got pulled over and they were like 'we are going to impound ur bike... haha, just kiddin man, we ride too we just wanted to see what you had on and to tell you not to mess around like that on the fwy..'
im like, 'oh *@#$*@#$*@#$*@#$, thats wicked...'

Nice. I wish those types of cops pulled me over. I always get pulled over by the guys who have something to prove, or they think they have a shot at getting my number.

Hehe...they'd only need to check your profile on here for that!!
Co-operating with cops always helps, I know it from very first hand experience after taking a ride downtown with a few the other week. :silenced:

Well I got pulled over on the 15 for doing a wheelie, I didnt get out of *@#$*@#$*@#$*@#$, they impounded my bike and I get to go to court tomorrow! $170 for the impound and $1500 a day for my lawyer with an estimated two days. Plus whatever the fines still end up to be, we're going to try and get it dismissed or reduced to exhibition of speed. That wheelie doesnt really seem worth it now ya know?

I learned something many years ago. Never ever ever bring your ticket with you to court. Once upon a time I appeared for court and handed them my ticket, they couldnt find my file so they took a copy of my ticket and filed off of that! I was pissed and vowed never again to bring a ticket with.
Well today that worked in my favor. Lo and behold, they couldnt find anything on me! They said "Did you bring your ticket?" Nope I dont have it anymore, Sorry. "You really should have brought it with you." They searched and searched, and had me sit down while they searched some more. They said well maybe you're gonna get off this time. They gave me a piece of paper saying I had appeared to cover my butt.
As I was walking out I had this huge smile on my face, as I neared the door I pulled the ticket out of my jacket pocket and held it up in the air with my back to the window. When I made the turn I looked back at the guy and he was smiling at me :)

On my next traffic stop, I wonder if they'll let me slide if I give them your number? ;)

Ugh.. on the way home from work today I did a little wheelie and got nailed. Cop threw the book at me. Impounded my bike for 30 days. Wrote me up for Reckless and Speed Contest (just cuz another biker took off from the light quickly beside me)....
Anyone know a good lawyer?

Dude I almost got nailed for doing a wheelie about a week ago. I got out of it because it was traffic and I white lined it and headed for the nearest off ramp whick was civic center blvd and proceeded through the gate to the Naval station and kept my bike there for the rest of the day. I really got lucky that day I did not get busted (broke as hell).

Word.
Kill the ignition and just sit there w/ your hands to your side. If you get pulled over in your car, kill the engine, if its dark turn the interior light on, and put both hands on the wheel. Keep the cop comfortable by being as unthreatening as possible and it just might pay off.
I got pulled over for speeding [again] on Camino Sante Fe btwn Miramar and Mira Mesa over the weekend - 69 in a 40mph. I spoke to the ociffer in a polite manner and he let me off w/ a warning. My luck has gotta run out sometime soon.....
