Here is the story, I'm a guy up in washington, with a new found passion for motorcycles. However, I neglected my 97' Honda F3 for 3 weeks after thanksgiving. It was parked and covered outside my apartment for the entire 3 weeks. I had just added some fuel system cleaner before I parked the bike and the gas was fresh. I went to ride my bike, it started fine, however around 4k rpms the bike lags and won't accelerate. When the throttle is opened up the bike will jump, but not a good way to ride! If I try and shift into 2nd the bike bogs down and won't have any power.

What I did...
I checked and changed the plugs right away (NGK Iridiums)
I made sure the battery was full
-The bike still ran rough...

So...
I pulled the carbs, installed a Factory Stage II jet kit
the bike has a K&N filter(recently cleaned) and a Yosh pipe.
I cleaned the carbs (They look brand new)
I replaced the fuel filter with a performance model
-the bike still does the same damn thing!!!
-the bike will idle great...it just isn't ridable...:o(

I took the bike to a Honda shop...the charged $100 and said they couldn't figure it out,
they want $360 to take apart the carbs to make sure they are clean??I just did that eh!

So...does anybody have experience with this bike or similar problems...
My hunches are...
-coils (honda said they ran all electrical tests)
-fuel pump (honda said it was fine)
-pipe

I desperately need to ride, especially with the nice weather we have been having...

First of all, welcome to the club. Be sure to introduce yourself Here (http://www.hypercycles.org/forums/showthread.php?t=43&page=1)

My suggestion would be checking the valves possibly, synch'in carbs (if not done already), or checking your gas tank: maybe you might have some build up from the gas sitting for a long period. .02

even though they said they checked it, it kinda sounds like your ignition coils could be bad

sounds to me like a fueling or air intake inssue...
how did you clean the carbs?

I appreciate all of your responses...here is a little more info...

My buddies and I are very interested in checking the coils again...can't always trust those dealer techs! When I cleaned the carbs we took them off, and opened them all up, cleaning the needles very carefully with carb cleaner and compressed air. I made sure that we seated them properly and adjusted the needle height etc. I also made sure not to get any carb cleaner on the gaskets or carb diaphragm. After I installed the jet kit I backed out the fuel mixture screws about 1/2 - 3/4 turns in order to allow the bike more gas...with larger jets and all. I know that the carbs need to be synced...but since the problem started occuring before I even touched the jets I know that there is something else wrong, which probably should be fixed before I mess with synching the carbs.

Does anybody know where you can go to get a really detailed picture of the Vaccum system for this bike? (97' F3)

you might want to try a clymers manual, or an actual honda service manual

im with arnold

gas can go bad, and or absorb moisture. try just running a few tanks a good gas throught it, then come back the the problem.

and sync the carbs

Hmm.. maybe check your carb float levels too!

So I played with the bike for a couple hours tonight...here is the situation.

The bike ran a little better when the air filter was taken off and the fuel filter was bypassed.
I figured this would indicate a fuel/mixture issue. I checked to make sure that all of the fuel screws were at the same position and I also adjusted the needles to allow more air...the bike ran exactly the same. The spark plugs are a beautiful dark brown color when pulled after running. I don't think that this is a fuel problem...I know the carbs could be synced (as soon as I get the tool) HOwever I still feel like there is something missing, just not enough bang in the cylinders...

*Has anyone tested Coils before or knows a good place to find out how?

did they ever check your compression

supposedly yes...I am a little dissapointed in the results from the $140 I spent at the shop, especially since the replaced and charged me for spark plugs...which were brand new and working great!!

I am off to run more tests today...I'm going to do some tests on the coils and the coil generator to make sure they are up to snuff.
