So I'm on my way to work yersterday about 5:20 am and see a car on the side of the road. It looked like it was a fresh wreck and I was hoping everything was OK. I pull over and offer assistance. He was fine and had a tow truck and a ride on the way. I get back on the freeway and by now it's raining again. I was about a couple miles from the Del Maar track exit and trying to pass a couple pickup trucks spraying water on my windshield making it hard to see. Sure enough I hydroplane, fishtale, and 360 across all lanes of traffic and smack the guard rail which kept me from tumbling over the side of the hill.

What really sucks.....noone, not even the people I just missed hitting stopped to see if I was OK. I'm not even mad I messed up my car.....now I get to ride my bike more. I'm just pissed noome stopped to see if I needed help. I'm not Mr. Right or Good Sumaritan, but I'm an Optimist and believe in good in others. Do unto others....... What's gone wrong with this world?

i'm glad you're ok man.

i often want to help out motorists by the side of the road. but when i spot them, i'm usually going 85mph or something and by the time i want to stop, i'm waaaaaaaaaay past them. You mention you were in the rain -- it is even more difficult for people to see you from a distance and stop in time.

When my bike ran out of gas, I stood by the side of the fwy for 45mins. Countless people saw me there. Some waived, some even mocked me. Did I get angry? Hell no. It's San Diego man. Majority of people here are ALWAYS in a hurry.

I am not the greatest person, but I help others when I can. When I'm going 65-85mph faster than the person on the side of the road might not be the best time to lend a helping hand.

Get a grip and be glad you're still here.

well you pretty much hit the nail on the head.

glad your okay though! I've had many strangers stop and make sure I was alright and lend assistance any time I've been stranded on the side of the road so I always return the favor. Don't worry, your karma is being processed at the moment it will come back in around 7-10 business days

Samaritan is spelled with an A. Now you can't say that nobody helped you today. Just kidding mang. Glad you're okay. I ride down that freeway around that time as well. I honestly don't think anyone cares as everyone's in such a hurry to get to work. I'd stop if I could.

Man, glad to hear that you're ok! Sorry that had to happen to you, but unfortunately bad things do happen to good people.

I remember waiting on the side of the freeway after riding through tele after the make shift gear shift peg fell off (it was a bolt). I walked up and down the side of the freeway for an hour before someone finally stopped to ask if I needed some help. Oh well... people are weird...

Last April a chick almost hit me, swerved and passed me on the left, lost control and hit a truck in front of me on my right. So I stop and make sure everything is ok, and I agree to be a witness. Now her insurance Co is trying to say I am somehow liable and wants my ins. co to do an investigation so they can try to get money out of me. Sad to say it, but I will probably have to think twice before stopping. Well, I would at least make sure you are ok, but I would not be hanging around.

I think my pride was hurt more than anything. Your replies picked my spirits up though!!! The drivers door was smashed and the rear panel behind it. I replaced the door yesterday. If I don't have to work this weekend and my bike still won't start then I'll get the rest of the dents out.......

As a rider, I was alert and cautious. Whenever I pulled up to an accident or disabled vehicle in the middle of the freeway, I always did my best to help. I've had some good experiences with other drivers -

On the 405 south, the carpool lane was crawling, but all other lanes were moving fairly quickly. Just after the 101 transition, we pulled up to a bed frame in the lane. I stopped to move it because 1) I was stopped anyways, and 2) I was in my full gear. No sooner had I taken a few steps that I noticed the minivan with a family in it directly behind me had put on its emergency blinkers and was blocking traffic for me, just in case.

What you have to remember is that there are rare cases where stranded vehicles are not what they seem. Sick-minded criminals do exist, and many people are scared by that. Although, in your case, there really is not much of an excuse.

If you do come across a situation where you want to make an effort, but not sure if it's 100% safe, just call up the CHP and they will dispatch a unit to the scene. 800-835-5247

agreed. i mean, if i saw someone's car on fire i would probably stop (and other things slightly less severe) however being a girl, i wont take help from someone willing to stop and lend a hand unless i see a person with a badge or a tow truck with AAA on the side. therefore i usually dont stop. it isnt a matter of being in a hurry i think, its just a matter of the horror stories

That's good info, about CHP, I just programmed it into my phone....in my situation though, I fish tailed and 180'd twice across traffic and 360 another couple of times from lane 4 to the guard rail on the side of the road of lane 1, facing the wrong way. My head lights were facing oncoming traffic....I don't think there was any mistaking what had just happened.

I'll share my story too to show you how people suck! I was driving down a four lane road (two lanes each way) in my girlfriends car on Christmas day no less! I was in the right lane and a BMW was next to me, a Prelude came up behind us and went to pass illegally on the left side of us both. Well the moron in the BMW panicked (I have no idea why) when the Honda got next to him and totally plowed into the side of my car. I spun out a few times across the road and ended up on the opposite curb facing the other direction, the car wasn't drivable. The nice part is that neither of the two cars stopped and I know that BMW had to be trashed as hard as he hit me. I spent the next month looking for damaged beemers! The nice thing about life is that you get to die at the end ;)
