Anyone interested in doing this trackday? I am already signed up so I was hoping that we might get a pretty good contingent going out to this event.
To make it a bit more simple, I plan on loading up on the Sunday before and leaving Monday morning at about 3:30AM. I get up before 5 every morning so it is no big deal to me. Don't have to worry about motel accomodations or traffic, was at least for the morning.
Let's do big track guys!

Aaron was mentioning something that if your suspension is set up wrong for Willow, it eats your tires up...
can someone chime in about this and maybe give some input and spread some knowledge around....I know Aaron will soon..

maybe if you have too much rebound, it'll look like your tires are cold tearing...

Wrong suspension will make it worse. It is the high speed never ending right turns (2,8,9) that wear out the tires. IMNSHO!

I wish i knew a good way of saying why bad suspension settings eat up tires, but i only know it from experience. Hopefully someone more knowledgable than i such as Bryant or Dustin or Jason will chime in.
I do know that when your suspension settings are not right that everything has to work harder, including your tires to make up for it.
To put it another way, its kinda obvious that the better your suspension is set up the easier it is to go fast. WHen it is not set up right, you and your bike work harder to go fast and the result is the added strain to the tires.
Cold tearing is usually a result of a differential in tire tempature to track tempature. It can also be a result of too much or too little air in the tire. Too little or too much air affects the tires tempature so i guess in a way its the same thing.
For willow, i don't think there is any way to avoid the pitting a tire endures in turns 8, 9, & 2. The bike spends soo much time on the right side of the carcass that the tire gets pitted, cold torn etc.
Making sure that your suspension is set up properly will reduce the wear however. It is very hard to adjust your settings, for fear of making things worse. This is where a pad of paper and pen can really help. Each session you go out make a change based on what you perceive your problems to be. Write down the results. Many times the adjustments you think you need are opposite of what make the bike run better. An example would be that i find soft settings make me run faster, but that goes against popular thought. Good luck and i hope i have made some sence!

perfect sense Aaron! Tires wear a lot more if the suspension is set up wrong because instead of gripping the road the tire is constantly slipping and regaining traction over and over again throughout the corner. In this case everytime the tire slide(this is a tiny amount, not noticeable by the rider...) your scrubbing rubber off, I know, I have this problem and really need a good trackday at willow to figure out my rear end! Right now I'm chewing through a rear after about 30-45 laps! Like Aaron said, go out and make changes. Make big changes at first just so you can tell a obvious difference and you will learn what changes effect what on the bike. With time and experience you'll have your bike dialed and be able to go to a different track and know exactly what to change to dial the bike back in...Big willow is unlike any other track I've been to though, so it takes a little more time to dial it in for that monster!

I'm not going to claim to be any type of suspension expert.. In fact, I'm the complete opposite of that.. I'm a moron when it comes to suspension.. I just ride the thing, and if I feel adjustments are needed on the suspension.. I make them.. I'm not much of a note-taker, etc..
If you're bike is eatin' up tires real bad.. I'd say you need to start turnin' clickers ;)

ps.. Shaggy.. if you're chewing up rears in 30-45 laps.. I'd say that's damn good ;)
typically.. my race tires will go 20 or so race laps (with one flip).. and they're smoked.. I then only use them for Practice (usually about 2 seconds slower than race pace)

Okay, if your tires last well, and the bike feels okay at other tracks. Then I would say you just need to make the Big Track adjustment. Turn up the preload on your springs. The high speed turns force the suspension deeper into its travel. At or near the bottom of travel the suspension gets much stiffer. This puts more stress on the tires since the suspension no longer soaks up the bumps. If spring alone does not do it, try a little less rebound damping. Do the springs first for willow.
Hope this is more helpful.

right on target, any time the tire leaves the pavment, or is not evenly applied to the pavment it is getting less traction and can slide, and chew up tires. even if you cannot feel it, the hopping around of the rearend even in small ammounts will cause more rear end wear then if you have it set up correctly.
too much compression _ and the tire can leave the pavment
too much rebound and it wont get back to the ground soon enough and the power is already on, so that can ear it down too.
too little compression and the front can loose its stability, having the front tire being hit up and not sticking to the pavment
too little rebound, and the back will bounce back and forth causing more wear than normal.
so to say that its one setting isnt really correct,...its a matter os getting the tire to stay connceted to the ground as smooth as possible.
 im going. see you there!!!
i heard ya can camp out at the track. how would i work that out? anyone?

Allan, Sean, and the guys I haven't met,
I know you guys are all fast guys, and that this is a fast big track. Should I wait to go on a trackday for streets of willow? I'd like to come, but I need a tow for my bike, and for sure, I'm a newbie, slowguy at the track. Input requested...

I honestly think that big track is a better track to learn than streets. Yes streets is a slower track but inherently a more technical track. I feel as though Im more prone to crashing at streets than at big track, due to the heavy braking. Big track really flows and is SOOOOOOOOOOO wide that you have a lot of room for error. I highly recommend it for your first trackday. Just cause you can go super fast there, doesnt mean you have to.

Something else that none of you have mentioned...
Willow is an old track, it has seen everything from freezing icy cold temperatures, to blistering hot sun beaten summers, and it has been abused by anything and everything with wheels and a motor.
The track is nice, but not pretty. Turn two being one of the worst. Look at the apex to nine, footpegs ground through the ashpault... The track is great, I love it, don't get me wrong. But it's not the ideal surface for the best tire wear either. Between suspension set-up, track surface, tire and track temps, and just the high average speed carried thru most of the corners, Willow is a good place to eat tires.

Zee, either track should be fine just as long as you stay within your limit. Yes SOW is more technical than WOT Willow, but some of the more technical tracks help improve riding skills.
P.S- I would also definitely check out an advanced rider school too.

better sign up right away and just stay on the street group, that way most people in that section will be in the same boat as you ...also you can get some instruction from that group
If anyone who knows Randy (ileenmydoubleR) and can contact him, that would be cool. As I will need to hitch a ride from him. I know I should be asking, but I don't have his cell phone number. It looks like the name boxes are filling up and I might not be able to get in, but I'll try. My cell is 619-252-2859. I already pm'd him, but I know pm's aren't always the fastest way of getting a msg to someone, especially if they don't check this website very often. I have to wait for his response before trying to sign up, as I might not have a ride at all.

It's Tuesday, and I need to prepare for the track. I have some Bridgestone Battlax BT012SS tires with about 3 mm or so near the wear markers for the middle. There seems to be more than 90% on the sides. I'm hoping I can use these to the track this coming monday. Plus, I still need to prepare my radiator, by removing the coolant. Hey guys, will I be able to pass with these tires???
