So I have the oppertunity to get myself a 97/98 cbr600 for extremely cheap (read few hundred bucks) but the only problem is that apparently that one of the piston is loose... Now my real question is it worth picking up the cheap bike and just having the engine rebuilt or should I keep looking? Should I have it inspected first to see if anything else wrong can be found?
Also, if it is worth rebuilding, anyone got suggestions where to go?

if you know how to drop the engine and mount it yourself, (better yet, rebuild it yourself), it would probably be worth it. If not, labor will probably cost at least a grand, maybe up to 2k.

I'd ebay a rebuild kit!
Hell sounds worth it.
If not can I buy it and put my F2 engine in it?

lol only if you can get me another bike in trade. I'm not looking for anything super fancy, just a good solid learner bike.

contact scottsms.com - ask him about the rebuiild and what you specifically need.
he can get all the prices you need.
you can decide from there if its what you need.
i would recommend doing a complete rebuild and major tune up (i.e. - pistons, rods, rings.) then air filter, spark, fluids, and exhaust if it doesnt have one.
maybe look on ebay I saw an F2 engine going for cheap the other day.
the most important thing after your beast is running is Tires, Suspension, and Brakes.
Plan on spending some money on some nice meats - I recommend the Pilot Powers and LCR is having a sale on 4/8. Get them to setup your suspension for you - $25. Even if its shot you can still learn how to take turns - trust me I did.
Then Brakes... you can have fun witht he endless amount of possibilities - wave rotors, full floating wave rotors, radial calipers :). But just some nice pads can do a world of difference as well. Galfer or Ferodo - of coarse.
But thats just my opinion. Kinda like an ******* - right?

translation: if you don't really already know what your doing its just better to get a bike that works. Hey at least I tried.

vaguely.... I'm really good at following instructions and the such... So if I had a detailed manual i'm sure its something I could figure out but the risk of having an inexperienced rebuilt engine between my legs is kinda frightening
