View Full Version : Putting the GF on the back for the first time

So I put the gf on the back of my bike for the first time and rode around the parking lot a little bit so I could get the hang of it. I'm trying to play it safe since I've been riding for just under a year and if I went down with her on the back I'd never forgive myself.

Before she got on I put all my gear on her and I just wore my own helment (had an extra helmet for her). She looked kinda funny in all that stuff, gloves that were too big, jacket didn't fit. I briefed her on not trying to get off the bike and to lean with me and to hang on tight. I think there were a couple instances where she was surprised by the bike, especially when shifting from 1st to 2nd (where it's got that extra oomf).

Bottom line, we had a great time, and now she's thinking about learning how to ride! But I think it may take a couple more rides on the back before she gets to that stage.

So, does anyone have any tips on doubling up?

Sounds like your doing good!

Try using a little more clutch to make gear shifts smooth. Also avoid hard breaking or your nuts with not like ya anymore!

I find wearing a backpack gives the girl something to grab onto. Just strap it on tight. One with a waist strap works best. I was struck by a car with a girl on the back and she was still gripping the backpack till we hit the ground and were ripped apart..

I guess that's a whole other thread tho!

Having a passenger is about the only time I use the rear brake alot, it really helps to smooth out the braking process instead of just letting the front load up.
Like Lost said, use plenty of clutch on gear shifts, that coupled with careful throttle control and the use of both brakes will smooth things out nicely.
Have fun and way to go for recruiting another soldier to the 2 wheeled army. :)

Keep your head forward so you guys aren't doing the helmet knock when coming to a stop. Most importantly, make sure she gets gear that fits her. I did hear that a g-string hanging out of the back of leather pants make for ideal protection.

LOL! Yeah we were doing the helmet knock a few times and then I figured it out. As soon as I get the cash (read: after 4/15) we're gonna go shopping for some gear.

She was wearing her low-cut jeans and a thong underneath so I'm sure the other drivers were pleasantly surprised when we split lanes past them

One last thing, Hamid. She should know to be able to push off the tank when you're coming to a stop rather than having her push into you. However, not a bad thing if she's stacked.

Ridding with a passenger can be really fun! There's just something about a girl putting her trust in you, holding on tight and showing off that a$$.

Using rear brakes are a must, with the exception of emergency stops. Just ride like you're riding in the rain. Be as smooth as possible to make the ride more enjoyable for the both of you.

BTW: We should plan a 2-up ride sometime soon :)

+1

let her know back/neck rubs are mandatory at stoplights as well

Have her push on the tank when you come to a stop to help prevent some of the nut pancaking effect.

Also, make sure she leans in the same direction as you else it will really throw off your balance. Don't forget to remind her about the exhaust either, a friend of mine that two-ups alot has melted a couple shoes on peoples exhaust before.

How about just teaching her to ride......so you don't have to worry about "nut pancaking" and "head knocking"....besides....a chick that rides is much sexier than any chick stuck on the back at someone elses mercy. However, I suppose my opinion is a bit biased. :ha:

The best way to ride two up is to have her put her hands on the tank around either side of you. That way when you stop she can support her own weight and if you accelerate all she has to do is wrap you up. Also in turns, if you are going right, have her look over your right shoulder, left...look over your left shoulder. That way her position is prime for turns and it wont throw you off balance.

I don't know, Tara. A chick on the back at my mercy can be pretty sexy also...especially if they believe that riding on the back is like playing a video game where they have to work the joystick to make the bike turn.

Hamid? That's what I was hearing in the parking lot....helmets knocking.I did not know what it was...but now that you said so:-)))

I hear ya loud Tara!

See, I tried to get her to learn how to ride at first, but she'd have none of it: didn't think it was for her, too dangerous, all kinds of excuses. So I thought to myself that instead of rushing in fast, I had to ease it in (the idea that is lol). So I put her on the back of the bike and she now knows how fun it can be... next stop, we're looking into a training bike for her soon as we can get some cash (read: after April 15).

Anyone got a 250cc for sale?

Yeah I would love to hear from someone who has some tips. I took my friend on a short ride around the parking lot and found it to be an interesting new feeling. I have a hot date , LOL so I need to learn. Anybody got any pointers? Anything they noticed different the first time they took someone along???

As someone that's been a passenger for the past couple years there are a few other things I've picked up to add to the list...
- Aside from pushing off the tank, it's helped me a lot to push down on the back pegs too, to relieve some of the stress on the wrists and shoulders during the slower stops and ride in general.
- If she can see when a dip or bump is coming, it could help to lift off the seat too, like you do, to ease the ride.
-And, if she's not quite comfortable looking over your shoulder in turns yet (cause even as a newbie-passenger you don't quite know how much you can move and whatnot) the best advise I got on my first rides was just to keep my head right behind that of the rider and follow the riders shoulders/lean in turns...and not to over do it...follow.

I hope this helps some...have fun!

Make sure that your rear suspension has enough travel or you are going to bottom out your bike when you go overa large speed bump or dip in the road. Open up the spring preload and stiffen up the compression dampening. It will take a few adjustments but it makes a big difference.

Thanks for the advice! One question: if you're pushing off of the tank, then how can u hold on when accelerating? So for example, if I switch to 2nd gear, usually it's a big kick, just want to be on the safe side and make sure she's got a good hold of the bike.

Well, with her arms around you to be able to push off the tank, when you accelerate she's already wrapped around you to hold on...she can also squeeze you with her legs if she needs more hold while riding. I assume you're teaching her a little about the bike and the ride, too, right?...so remind her to listen and feel you riding, generally she'll be able to tell when you change gears if she's paying attention. If you're gonna do some major accelerating and/or quick shifting, you can give her a quick tap on the leg or something as warning. All these pointers are great as starters, but it'll all come down to her comfort and finding the positions that best suit her (and you).

I'd be happy to help with any other questions...from you or her...

Did you write anything after this sentence?

But seriously, if you ever need a ride.... :guitar:

Heehee...thought someone might catch that...I didn't see the innuendo until I had already posted. But, hey...it's all good, right!

...and I hope to be riding all by myself in the next month or two, finally...

Yeah, we're hoping to get my gf a bike by the end of May. We're going shopping for a helmet, jacket and gloves tomorrow :squid:

Thanks for the tips, though. I'm sure we'll have a good time on Sunday.

make sure she knows that you're least stable when you're coming to a stop and taking off. that if she needs to move, she should wait til your feet are on the ground. cause it's so tempting to shift when you're slowing down, but that's no fun.
