View Full Version : bike won't start

About two weeks went by without me starting my bike and now I can't get it to start. It has spark, fuel comes out of the tank when I put it in prime, I jumped it when I noticed the cranking speed dropped, so it's cranking fast enough. I can blow through the fuel filter, so it doesn't seem to be blocked.
Also, if I spray some carb spray into the air inlet it'll start and run for a few seconds, then just die. I checked one of the plugs, so it's not getting flooded, too. The fuel line is clear from the tank to the carbs.
Any ideas as to what it can be?
thanks,
Jakub

seems to me like there's no fuel getting into the engine. try turning the throttle a few times to get the gas pumping... then start it up with the throttle fully open. just dont do it too much cuz u might flood the engine..... and if u do.... u just might get a backfire.

I was giving it throttle when trying to start it. What could cause the fuel not getting into the engine? I'm not to literate when it comes to carbs.

this is what i do sometimes with my bike.... i sit on it..... stand it upright... open up the gas tank... shake it a bit... make sure that the gas is open (dial on the side of the bike) then close up the gas tank and try to start it up.
i'm not sure y my bike does it too.... but its usually if it sits for a while. i guess there's just a trick to my bike starting it up. maybe there's one for your's too? heh.

if you keep spraying carb cleaner into the carbs can you keep it running?
have you checked your air filter?
What about vacuum lines to your tank...these are just somethings that have happened to me.
Is it cranking at least?

I haven't continually spray carb spray into the bike. The air filter is new, and is actually out right now, since I'm spraying right into the air inlet. My tank has no vacuum lines, just two fuel lines, the main, and reserve. I know that fuel is getting to the carb, but it almost seems like its not getting past that. I sprayed carb spray into one of the fuel lines and it still wouldn't start.
The bike cranks. Had my car battery hooked up to it cause after a while the battery started running low.

what about gummed up jets or needles,
its seems like its a fuel problem, and you have checked just about everything.
maybe clean the jets and needles, and check the float bowls.

you may if you bike has one, check the fuel pump.

has it backfired yet? i firgured with all that cranking and carb fuems it might backfire... thats when i know that fuel is going through but not catching the spark.
or the fuel pump could be it too....
what was the last thing u did?
where did u ride?
how hard did u ride it?
that's what i asked myself when my rectifier went out. its kinda hard to diagnose if the bikes not infront of me.... but doesn't seem too serious. i bet u'll get it started again. Gluck

Last time I rode it was about 3 weeks ago. Just around my neighborhood since it wasn't registered or anything. Since then I changed the tires. Now that I think about it I did lift the bike up using rope and my engine hoist, so maybe it grabbed and unplugged some vacuum hose or something, but I didn't see anything.
I'm not sure if the bike has a fuel pump. I'll have to check the manual for it.
thanks for all the suggestions.

The bike has no fuel pump, just gravity feed. I took the carbs off, took the float bowls off, and sprayed everything with carb cleaner. Put it back together and still nothing.
I didn't check the line from the fuel inlet to the carbs, so I'll pull them again, and check that out. But if that's not it, I'm at a total loss as to what it can be. If I have the carbs off, what else can I check? I'm 95% sure its something with the carbs.

Actually, fuel was in the float bowls, so fuel is getting into the carbs. No idea what it can be.

After a few weeks of trying to figure it out (including rebuilding the carbs) I got it started. Apparantly when I hoisted the bike up to pull the tires I caught onto the throttle cable and the throttle wasn't closing all the way. The bike won't start with the choke open and the throttle open, so since the throttle never closed, the bike wouldn't start. Such a stupid thing that I would never have thought of and I'm glad someone on another forum brought it to my attention.
