I know he's before our time, but have you guys ever noticed this guy's riding sytle. It's classified as being Broad Sided, but its quite different than seen today in the MotoGP. It sure worked for him though.
He leans over the tank, his head is towards the outside mirror, his leg is flush against the ground, quite unusual, but looks PIMP.
here's a few shots of Mr. 5x World Champ.

He does ride traditionally too, but switches back to his broad sided technique once apex deep into a corner.....

Super tight. but i'm guessing if i went to the track and tried that they would laugh me off the track.

In "FASTER" you see a great action shot of Mick rounding a nice corner in his patented style, watch the movie again and slow-motion him doing what he does best.

he is a perfect example that there no right way to position yourself. every rider has there own style that works for them, and most people would say his body positioning was all wrong yet he was world champion. there are guide lines to follow but then it is pretty much all up to your own style

could be, that might be why he was so popular leavin his classic "blackies" out of every turn. Spin'n that rear end loose.

The reason why he rides that way is cuzz he broke his leg during his early days in the GP (before he won his first 500 cc title). There is a documentary done on crashes and the evolution of crash protection that was shown on I believe the National Geographic. It featured Doohan almost loosing his leg and he is virtually incapacitated on that side of his leg, so he had to change his riding style.

Mick is one of my friends from schools (John Doohan) uncle....professional athletisism seems to run in the family...Mick's brother (my friends dad) used to be a professional tennis player in australia, and my friend john is an all-state tennis player that got 2nd in doubles. and then mick. I dont know about the rest of the family, theres bound to be another pro athlete in the family somewhere...

Sorry, Josh. Your form actually looks better. Doohan is pretty twisted on his seat.

If only Keith Code could've gotten to him earlier. That guy coulda been fast. Maybe even a world champion. (http://www.hypercycles.org/forums/showthread.php?t=7073)

i have to lean way the hell over on my bike and when deep into a corner i usually start scraping my pegs ... probably because of my 30" inseam. you tall guys can just stick your knee out and start dragging.... i'm almost on my side!
i tried hanging way off and sticking my knee off but then my outside leg starts to lose it and my foot comes off the peg... scary!
but with doohan's style, i would imagine that you lose some lean angle speed because not all of his mass is off the side of the bike... he may be world champion, but he can get more corner speed by hanging off the inside side of the bike more.
it doesnt mean he isn't fast though! he probably is a lot faster than other riders on other parts of his riding.

Yeah, except Mick actually leans his bike over. :ha:
Whatever works, I guess, but having your body up like that looks like you would push the front a lot. I wonder if his set-up on his 500 was much different than the other riders on Hondas?

There was a rider who won the World Superbike Championship many years back (will try and find his name again), soon after it's inception. He never once dragged his knee. He would sit up and wrestle the bike away from his body kinda dirt bike style. Unconventional body positioning according to every book you read on fast riding techniques nowadays but it worked for him.
