Hey guys, been lurking around for some time and now I've signed up for the MSF next month. After course will look into getting a starter bike for myself, will probably try to get a Ninja 250 or 500 (I'm 6'2" so I'm not sure). Just saying hey and hope to ride with you guys soon. Any pointers and suggestions welcome, and if you know of any good bike for sale let me know.

hey man, fellow lurker here.
get an sv650. great bike for the money, and you won't grow out of it too soon. besides, a 6ft+ dude on a 250 would kinda look funny. take msf, go on as many test rides as possible, 'cause ultimately its what your comfortable on.

Thanks for the welcome guys.
Hey daMartian, you know this bike that is being sold? How's maintenance on these? I've read about SV650s and Ninjas being easy since parts can be found all over and rather cheap, but what about a GS500?

welcome. i started on an ex500. but, you've pretty much got a good foot on me--lucky tall person. i really liked it. docile. but still fairly fun. my spedometer did read 120 one morning on my way to work. don't do that. it's not legal. hee hee hee...
since you're so tall you might wanna consider something like a yzf600r

I started on a '90 Suzuki GS500, great bike. Simple to work on if needed, super light, easy to handle. Perfect bike for a beginner, plus you can usually score one for about $1500 or less. Also there are no side plastics to replace if you crash or dump it. I suggest not spending more than $1500 on your first bike and put extra money into riding gear. Once you're comfortable with the GS you can properly graduate to your modern 600cc sport bike.

Yah, I agree. The SV is definitely a great starter bike...

Consider the SV650s...it's worth it in the long run and will be an investment. You don't want to kick yourself 2 months from now because the bike you bought was too small. You definitely get what you pay for. Welcome to HC.
