View Full Version : Taking Passengers

During a superbowl party I attended, I switched bikes with Mike D for a day and took 3 different passengers for a ride. 2 of the girls had never been on a back of a bike. I can't believe how much I missed taking a passenger. The last girl I took used to ride so she knew the drill. I was definitely a little tired taking a passenger, back to back to back, but it was worth it. One of them actually wants to go to Palomar or Potrero, but the others just want to cruise.
There are guys who sell passenger pegs that will go with my Sato Banzai mounts, but I'm afraid that the passenger's legs will get real tired after only a short time. They are very similar to this, and you can tell by the location that the feet placement are very high.

We should have another two up day in the near future. Maybe just a lil cruise out to julian? Or potero cafe...

Allan, does the RC51 have a real seat for a pillon by any chance? I thought those came with solo tails only?

How strange -- pasta_fredo and I were just talking about pillions because of my experience this past weekend. I had one good and one bad pillion.
http://img.aguto.com/albums/03r6c/IMG_7796.jpg
The only problems with the high pegs and seats are the mounting and dismounting for the vertically challenged. My shorter passenger gracefully fell off her perch because she kept reaching for the ground but never really touched down... kinda hard to explain.
Any chance of getting longer extensions to put the passenger pegs lower? The stock R6 are kinda low considering how high the seat is.
-- edit --
Meant to mention: out of the 5 passengers that I have had on the R6, only one complained about being cramped up top. The other 4 commented on how high they were, but did not mind the position of their legs until it was time to get on or off the bike.

I think the 'seat' is a rubber mat with a piece of double sided tape slapped on. ... ouch! LOL!

I know what you mean... I had someone almost fall off while trying to slide off one side (almost dragged us both down), rather than hopping off... :-p

Dre, I'm not sure what happened but it felt like Tracy had a really hard time getting on and off my bike too. I felt really bad and didn't really have any ideas on what would make it easier except to park next to a curb when i dropped her off at my place.

i rememeber seeing her have such a hard time getting on your bike when you left nike night. but once you get the hang of it, its not that hard. i will have to give tracy lessons on how to get on and off. since i am the same size.

Allan is it me or is that passenger peg only held up by one bolt?!?!

My g/f mentioned many times that she misses riding so maybe a 2 up ride could actually happen in the near future.

Yeah, the pillion seat is extremely small on the RC51, I think the smallest of any bike I have ever seen. One thing that is nice about it is that it is so small, it doesn't help the passenger stay in place, so when I brake hard, she'd always scoot forward into my seat, lol. ;)
I either order those extension brackets for the pegs, or get my forks done, sucks to have to make that choice.

Have you seen those love handles that they sell for passengers to hold on it? Just a belt that the driver wears with two handles for the passenger to hang on to.

Yeah, I have seen those in some of the mags. I wonder how they work. I usually just like my passenger to grab me around the waist and clasp hands in the front.

You dog!
HA HA HA....
As far as mounting and dismounting the R6.... I usually just tell them to wait until I have my footing and then I tell them to just stand up on the pegs and swing around to the left..... that way they don't scratch my bike all up and they can succesfully touch the ground without falling.... as long as you are ready for it it shouldn't tip your bike over... just stress that they MUST TELL you befor ethey do anything.

What, the maxi pad Honda claims is a seat?
The handles are basically a belt worn around the driver's waist. I'm not sure what keeps them from rotating around, though. I usually have passengers put their hands on the gas tank.

When my passengers put their hands on the gastank, they usually get really tired after only a short while. I like it when they hug me close ;).

When is this thing happening? Lately I have been 2 up anyway, but it would cool to ride two up with others. My girl loves it back there. As a mater of fact, she is signing up the MSF class and may get a bike of her own. I can't wait. Anyway, anyone go to that Pacific track time? I hear they have a 2 up session so you can give you significant other a spin around the track. Sounds interesting.

Se I make the passenger do double duty... when we are accelerating hold onto me and when we're stopping make sure you put your hands on the tank.... makes the ride more enjoyable for the both of us :)

Actually it was her first time on the bike yesterday, and she had previously sworn that she would never get on one. We just went cruising on the freeways, but now she loves it and wants to hit up some twisties.

really? I would think being on the freeway next to all those cars at such a high speed would be scary for a first timer. I know it was for me when I had to ride passenger one time!
I give major props to girls that hop on the back of a bike. Definitely more "thrilling" than actually being the pilot.

We had to get to there in stages though. First we went around the block and she was okay with that. Then we went cruising around Coors Ampitheater (that's where we were chillin). She was a little freaked out, but was cool to try riding farther. I definitely give her props because she was so afraid in the first place, but I just convinced her that I was a safe rider and that I couldn't stunt to save my life, haha.

I had another pillion ride on Sunday. Wasn't planning on it, but my friend said she was too tired to ride her own bike and hopped on the back of mine. As we got going, I felt something pressed up against my back. This is new as the '03 R6 rider seat is HUGE and people have trouble getting up against me without banging helmets. And then I remembered, "oh, right, she's kinda 'endowed' in that area." ;) Too bad I was wearing a 'Stich... with a back protector. We took a nice, easy pace up the Crest to Angeles Forest Highway to Lake Elizabeth Rd. to Green Valley for lunch with some friends. For the return route we hopped on San Francisquito to Bouqet.
This time, I remembered to inflate in my tires and adjust the preload settings before she threw her leg over the pillion seat -- the bike felt precise instead of slushy.
