Start small and work your way up.
First of all, your options should be.
Ninja 250
or
Ninja 500
or
GSF 500 (Suzuki)
Go to the DMV get your written test out of the way to get your permit.
Google Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) and sign up for the coarse.
or
I'm sure plenty of people here have the phone number for the Civilian MSF . I've only got the phone numbers for the military version of MSF.

TAKE THE MSF!!!!! They teach you all the stuff you need to GET STARTED. Get your license, get a modest bike (not the latest and greatest machines) and GET YOUR GEAR. You may want to look into insurance prices, I am sure they will not be kind to a new 19 y/o rider. Smaller used bikes = cheaper insurance.

Welcome aboard! Definitely take the MSF course and get a smaller used bike, you will save alot more money in the long run.

+1
Cycletrader.com and craigslist.org are some places to look for used bikes. Be careful of scams. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

I'm 19, insurance is about 1300 a year from progressive for liability, which I was informed is "rape" by a farmers agent. So I will be switching to farmers next month as they are cheaper, by about $400, and any agent willing to use language like that to a potential customer has gotta be an awesome dude.
So yes, prepare to be raped for insurance money. Doesn't seem like to much at first, but when others are paying $100-$150 a year, that's just bullshit.
I was in your same boat a while ago. I had never ridden a bike before. So I went down to the DMV, got my motorcycle permit, signed up for the MSF, passed it, started riding.
I bought my bike first, which I do not recommend, even though I got lucky and sort of knew what to look for, wait to buy your bike until after you've PASSED the MSF. You may decide that riding is not for you. Believe me, there were people in my class that have no business riding a motorcycle, let alone driving a car, or operating any kind of motorized or people powered vehicle or cycle. Why you ask? Let me tell you ONE of the incidents, after this one the instructors kicked her out. She stopped, and didn't put her foot down, no effort, no oops I better put that foot down I'm tipping over, nothing. She just stopped, looked around like everything was fine, and tipped over. I believe this was on the exercise where they have you slow down, check for cross traffic, and then proceed, who knows, maybe she saw a car coming and panicked :slap: . Anyways, take the MSF before you buy your bike. If you decide riding is for you, go get your m1 with your MSF certificate and go buy a USED bike. Take someone who knows a bit about bikes along with you. If you don't know anyone who rides, by the time your ready to buy, if you hang around here, I'm sure you will have made a few friends that would be more than happy to take time out of their weekend and spend a couple hours going over a ninja 250 / ninja 500 / f2 / f3 / gs500, basically something used, 600cc's and under, and a few years + old.
Hope this helps, be safe out there, "It's not a game".

hey, everyone here is right. i started riding when i was 18 on a 04 r6 (never ridden before). i guess its just all up to you on what bike you get and know what you could handle.
i definitly say take the MSF class, i thought it taught some valueable things. im 19 now and pay about 100 bucks for full coverage.
good luck and be safe
wtf, you pay 100 a year? Why can't I find these rates? Who do you have insurance thru?

I agree start off with the MSF class. Insurance is going to be pretty high. Good luck my friend and when you get your bike, ride to your own ability.

Wow... you ARE getting raped for insurance. I just started riding, I'm 20, clean driving record, $276 a year or about $23 a month full coverage thru state farm.
