June Race Report
This month I figured I would do the ARC or advanced racers clinic. The day started well and I was learning tons on good information. In our first session I was behind a Ducati, and unfortunately, he blew his crank case breather. I got a nice oil shower and amazingly did not crash that session. The session was red flagged and we were back in the classroom. After that classroom session it was time to get back on the track. For some reason I did not check my tires to see if they had soaked up and oil and that was a stupid mistake. On our warm up lap in turn three I had the bike wash out on me. I was ok, not even bruised but the bike was a mess. I broke thru the left case cover and destroyed my beautiful Sato rear set. I had an extra set of graves rear sets, but no extra case cover. I tried to get as much classroom time as possible but I missed quite a bit trying to find a case cover. I finally found one and was able to begin flushing the cases and trying to get the bike put back together.
Saturday morning I started the bike for the first time since the crash and I heard a terrible grinding sound. Not good. I took the cover off and found the bracket that holds the stator wires out of the way was rubbing on the stator. Easy fix, I just bent the bracket a bit and I was good to go. I put it back together for the second time and it worked perfectly!
I went out for the first session of my day and I was doing 37’s. I just wanted to take it slow and work the oil out of the tires and once I thought they were clean, I just didn’t feel like trusting the tires. I came in a told myself, “ok, 33’s next session.” Next session I went out and did 34 flats and felt worried about Sunday. I did two more sessions and didn’t check my times as I didn’t want to have a confidence problem if I didn’t go faster.
Sunday morning rolls around and I find out that middle weight nervous is the last race of the day! I didn’t want to be waiting that long to race and figured I would enter heavy weight nervous as well. The office told me I might get protested for running the r6 in the 1000cc class but I was just doing it for fun, so I didn’t really care.
The morning went pretty quick. Jae and I played mechanic for Troy Maturo, who was really damn fast out there. He was running 24’s all day. The heavy weight race was up and I was gridded 37th out of 38 grid positions. I was in the second wave so my main goal was the catch the first wave and try to get past a few of them. I had an ok start considering I had to drag race against liter bikes to turn one. After turn one I was having a blast! I think it was the second or third lap when I finally reeled in the first wave. That race was really fun and I think I got 10th (not sure due to some racers not having transponders). I was even able to make a few passes down the front straight, which was a hoot on the little 600. Next time I go out, I might try racing the R1, which I have been getting ready.
I felt really good for middle-weight novice but I knew I really had to pick up the pace if I was going to do well. I got a mediocre start and I was between 10th-12th after turn one. Pretty much the whole race I put my head down and went as fast as I could go. I caught the lead pack and started to make my way thru it. I had a little trouble reeling in the 2nd place guy and I passed him on the brakes going into 1 on the last lap. Mid corner he comes over the top of me, and slams the door shut on me. At this point I was pissed! I went wide open from the exit of one to almost the exit of two going around him and a lapper on the outside of two. I did not realize it at the time but apparently we were three wide thru two and I guess it looked like I was going to run out of track but I didn’t feel like that on the track. I was able to see 1st place ahead of me and really tried to close the gap but it was the last lap and it was too little too late. I got 2nd , and was pretty happy. Probably should have pushed harder in the first few laps. My times for that race were low 30’s but I was unable to break into the 29’s.
I want to thank everyone that came out to see us and help out. Thanks to Bryant, Jae, Karen, Troy and family, Shaggy, Sean, Brian, Buymoto, and everyone else that cheered on the Buymoto Team this weekend!
P.S. Congrats to Jason (Shaggy) for setting a personal best of 1:27.200!
