Didn't I read a similar article last year about the 05 R6? The picture I remember seeing even looks similar. Hopefully, Yamaha will come through for next year.

Yeah if you look at the date near the bar code, it says 10/08/2005. . . so I'm too sure on the legitimacy of this article.

P.S-good job Rich for keeping this on track and not making any references to Hypersport! :ha: :woot:

The article at least is legit, there is a blurb about it non their website:

Not sure about the info though.

I might be the only one, but why the hell is underseat exhaust so damn popular????

I think it's pretty ugly ( except on the R1) plus it weighs a lot more and cuts power output...plus you screw up the exhaust no matter which side you crash on. I hate to say it but suzuki has my respect for keeping it real with the lightest, most powerful exhaust/bikes around...please Yamaha say it ain't so!

looks kinda the same except the under tail still cool though

Please tell us how you really feel about undertail exhausts. J/K

I think the hype surrounding it is purely based on aesthetics as well. Let's face it though...that's one of the factors people use to buy bikes. I don't know if the picture does it any justice though, but I'm certain it'll be comparable to the R1. That's why I don't understand how you find it ugly, Mr. Shaggadelic.

I hear ya Jason, i'm still not feelin the undertail exhauts either... to me it looks like something's missing.. i dunno. One of my favorite highlights of a bikes look/profile is a dope a$$ pipe on the the side. And if you need a lil extra flair... high exit. wut wuuut!

but it's all about the side... skatin over rollerblading, boarding over skiing, hamburgers over hotdogs... ok I'm not sure where i'm going with this...

i really hope they dont go to the undertail exhaust, its just a fad to sell the bikes. im still a fan of the side mount.

actuall,..when done correctly, underseat systems do help.

The added wind resistance of a can sticking out of the side takes more off the top end speed than the extra weight. Also the weight is more balanced. And a few people have gone down and had 0 exhaust damage. and if you have large feat, you can finally not melt the **** out of your right boot.

granted i think its still a marketing push,...but their are benifits

how big of a power difference does it make to have an undertail exhaust vice side mount?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the 04-05 R1s make more power with the undertail exhausts and weigh less than prior years. I do realize there are engine changes, but I just don't see how going undertail would interfere with power output...

Yah, for me, I just like the way the undertail looks, it's very symmetrical. Maybe I should have gotten a SV1K... hmmm....

just for example.

i know the numbers for an 02 r1.

there was a consistant loss of 1-2 HP going from a low mount to high mount slip on ( only on top end hp)

In order to make the exhaust route under the tail it has to make at least two extra bends in the pipe ( many bikes have at least 3 extra bends) plus the actual exhaust system is a lot longer, over a foot longer than normal side exhaust...

Well, Ducati pulls it off pretty well. And don't forget *Haaaleeeeeelllluuuuuuu-huuuu-yaaaaa* MV Augusta's full titanium quad-exit undertail system *Haaa-haaa-leeee-heeee-uuuuu-uuuu-aaaaaaaaaaaaaa*

Kawi at least had a halfway decent excuse with aerodynamics since the rest of the bike reflected that goal. But on a general level I agree and do not like undertail exhausts.

More specifically, I say unless you have a single-sided swingarm, you should not have an undertail exhaust. :nerd:

so how much more HP do you guys think the 06 will have over prior years?

maybe someone will do something crazeeeee and do a custom side mount exhaust vice custom undertail exhaust!!

What happened to the white graphics/paint? With only blue and black like that the bike looks like the blue Ninja 636. BORRING!! Keep it real with blue and white Yamaha! One last thing, I hope the exhaust insn't the blow-up doll-esque, single opening like on the CBR 600.

I think, Yamaha kind of kept the options open for those who are not fans of the undertail. With the minor cosmetic changes, if one doesn't like the undertail, just buy an '05. If one craves an undertail, new engine, gills on the side, MORE HP, then go with the '06. My .02

Suzuki, might be the only 600 sportbike with a side mount. . . even Triumph's Daytona is getting extra cc's and looks like it's going undertail as well. 680RR

Thank god....
Seriously...OVERRATED.

IMHO UNDERTAILS SUCK
And you can quote me boy cause I said...shiiiiit

The only bike that should have one is the 748/916/996/998 other than that is just a little too poserific for me.

My number one GRIPE about an undertail....NO TRUNK :errf:

This may be a stupid question with an obvious anwser, but why don't they turn the engine around so that the headers point to the rear of the bike? :errf:

I think it looks better with the undertail exhaust. Anything they do to an R6 makes it look better.

I think it has to do with the intake of air into the engine. For that you want the shortest and straighest possible route..

Undertails are lame. I hate the one on my r1. Looks cool but its hella hot and im sure the bike make more power with a side mount. As for side mounts causing air resistance, i call b.s. If the pipe were sticking way out, but as it is the pipe site is a low pressure area so any extra drag is minimal...

Undertails give a bike a cleaner look showing off the new swingarm designs completely and not just from one side. With the thinner profiles of the bikes, undertails work better from an aesthetic perspective. That new exhaust on the Gixxer 1k is so out of place compared to the rest of the bike. It's like some mototumor.

From a power point of view, the engines are tuned for the undertails so optimal performance has been eked out from the system.

I don't know about a toaster underneath your azz.If its a Ducati....now that's a diffrent story.
But why the hell would you hide the exhaust under your seat...??? When they look so good recently and even add a little personality to your bike.I don't feeling it......Not too happy about it.It's someting about a bike with a exhaust on the side...or its just maybe that I'm not ready for that kind of change yet.

There's enough room for your makeup bag! :roflmao:

Yeah seriously, I think undertail exhausts are the most ugliest, profound, hideous, sullen, repugnant things on the face of this earth! :puke: Why would these engineers with PhD's even waste their time and effort in designing such a smooth and sleek exhaust with mandrel bent pipes to help show off the lines a little better.
I mean why would these engineers put sooooooooo much R&D into making these bikes faster, sleeker and aerodynamic. . . What a waste. What a bunch of idiots!
