View Full Version : Which part of your feet do you place on the pegs in a turn?

Personally, I ride on the balls of my feet, but I have seen some racers place their feet (especially on the outer peg) more foward, so that their arch or even heel rests on the footpegs. I have tried this style, but it seems very unnatural to me in the middle of a turn.

However, I can see the benefits as it lets you shift more easily entering or exiting a corner while still lean over and without upsetting the suspension as much since you don't have to shift your body to get at the pedals. It's also nice under braking as you don't have to move your feet backwards as you are fighting the G forces. My leg muscles feel more relaxed and less prone to fatigue, but again, it feels unnatural since I can't put as much pressure on the tank with my knee... or is it just cuz i'm short? :p

What do you guys do?

I use the balls of my feet too. I can see why the other method could help. Sometimes when I adjust to shift it unsettles the bike a little. On the other hand I feel more in controll on my toes.

I ride on the balls of the feet. In the picture you showed he was on the ball of his feet on the leaning side, I assume that he had his other foot to cover the rear brake in case he needed to tighten up is line instead of shifting his body to do it, it's a common practice, so long as you don't roll off the throttle, it will slow you down enough to keep you in your line and not drifting if your coming in to hot..If you look closely at that second picture that is what he is doing, he's on the rear break in the middle of the apex to keep him tight.

i ride on the middle part of my foot...when i am on my game.... when i am not feeling right i am on the balls of my feet, as i get relaxed i shift my foot forward more.. but hey... i am slow so i got that going for me!

I have experimented with both ways myself.

I find that riding on the balls of my feet feels more natural. It makes for an easier transition from left to right turns. Hooking your heel, on the other hand, may be better in a long sweeper as for me it seemed to put more of my weight on my bone structure. At times in long sweepers, especially late in the day, my legs begin to twitch because they're fatigued. Now realize I am in shape... but that's the shape of a pear, so maybe I'm just lazy....

depends on where I'm at. 90% of my riding on the street and track I keep my feet on the balls at all times. At the big track though I shift my outer foot forwrd on the peg and hook it into the heel. It takes less effort and keeps me more relaxed for longer periods of time.

Interesting. This same topic is being discussed on the new club racers board. The experienced, super fast guys, say to move your outer foot to your heal, like Shaggy describes above. It helps you be more planted or something. They say it can take a bit of getting used to. I'm going to start practicing it the next time I'm on the the track. For super long turns with a lot of lean, like 2 and 9 at big Willow, this could make a difference.

Jeff, does any of this really matter when you wear size 5 female shoes to match your suit? :roflmao:
