View Full Version : Parking Question-ettiquette

Ok, this is an etiquette question. The other day I parked in Gilman, and parked in such a manner that the bike infront of me could get out(the wall prevented him from going anywhere but backwards), so i slipped in farther so they he could move around me. I locked my steering and went to class. 2 hrs later i come to my bike to find that someone had parked right behind me:grr:, so I had nowhere to go. I sat there for 5 minutes or so saw that his/her steering was unlocked, and there was no disk lock on his/her bike, waited a few more minutes(maybe s/he would show up after a class) and finally slid the bike out, backed mine out, and slid his/hers back in.
I didn't enjoy it, I know I wouldn't like coming back to my bike to find someone moving it, especially if I didn't know them, but at the same time I went to a special effort to not make the other guy stuck, just to come back and find myself stuck.
anyone have any thoughts/conventions on this?

you did the right thing. and i think the other person intentionally left the steering unlocked for that same reason. but IMO it was still not nice to park directly behind you. because if you drop the bike while moving it out of the way, its basically vandalism. whenever i park next to another bike, i dont move all the way into the stall. i park in such a way that i am neither in the other bikes outward path, and that no one can park behind me to block me in.
on another note, when you park all the way into the stall, it makes it look like you plan on being there for a long time. or plan on staying late. so in your good intentions, you may have invited the other rider to park behind you.

thats how it is at ucsd or any other crowded school. you'll be lucky to find yourself unblocked this year. everyone has bikes now. i'm blocked in all the time. ur lucky if u don't find new scratches from stoopid azz newbs who don't respect other people's stuff and like to have their bar ends slide across your fairings too.

I was damn near about to kick a dumb ass blue SV over last week behind EBU1. The person parked directly perpendicular behind 4+ bikes. Learn some damn manners. When I get assed out of a spot, I try to be creative, rather than rude.

Luckily I live on campus, so I just keep my bike at the apartment M parking lots. I've seen the parking at Gilman during a school day and I must say I don't know how you guys do it. UCSD parking sucks.
Random Q: When you guys go to the store or something do you park on the curb? I know it's illegal, but it seems like almost everybody does it. I'd rather take up a little space on the curb (out of pedestrians' way of course), than take up a whole parking spot...
BTW: I know a guy with an SV, but i won't name any names, especially if the bike had helmets locked into the back seat.

not me! i swear! hahaha. Parking on campus isn't bad as long as you keep away from Gilman and Center.

Don't block people in plain and simple. If you park your stuff in such a manner as to prohibit someone with reasonable skill from maneuvering the bike out of their parking spot.... you just gave them carte blanche to do whatever they wish to your stuff so they can get their bike out.
Wings you did the right thing.

Unless I plan on staying for a really long time, I never park where I'm gonna get blocked in. As far as blocking other people in, I try not to. If there's no way out (gilman), I won't park there, but if there's a hole they can get out, or if they can take the curb, I'll park behind them if I have to (center campus).
As far as parking across behind bikes, that's just looking to piss people off. There are so many moto-lots around campus that it's not that hard to go to the next one. We already have it pretty nice as far as location is concerned, don't stress out about walking an extra couple of minutes.
