Hi all,
I recently bought my first bike 2001 R6. I'm happy with it but there is this weird whining sound when the bike is around 3-6k rpms. Sounds like it is from the engine. Anyone have any ideas? I know its kinda vague but thats all I can describe.
Maybe its normal? All this is new to me. Thanks.

what are other symptoms?
are there any problems with power, temp, electrical?
is there any problems with the carbs?

oh man, I have no clue. everything else seems fine. although last night I did smell something weird, it was like something slightly burnt. maybe it was oil.
eveything works fine though.
I dont know what/where the carbs are? What kind of problem may it have?

hmm maybe i will. I was just thinking, I have a broken fairing stay. But I dont think the sound is from the stay chattering...
when/where is bike night, i haven't seen any posts about it

That high pitched whining you hear at 6K RPM's is the exhaust of the 636 that just blew past you.
OK sorry. Does it happen in nuetral, in gear, or both??? Only in first, etc.....
When accelerating AND decelerating???
If it's just a short whistle after you release the throttle, don't worry it's just your turbocharger.

haha, it happens while in gear and in every gear it seems. while accelerating and decelerating.

the sound seems to be coming out from the space between the tank and the speedo.

Where is that broken fairing stay again? Hmmmm. GO CHECK!!!!! Hold it while accelerating. OK, how about, be REALLY CAREFUL while you hold it and accelerate on your first bike. ;)
No??? If you're ssssssssssssssssuuuurrrrrrrrrrrreee.
Is it a constant pitch whining, or does it get higher as RPM's increase. Louder as RPM's increase?
Does it get higher or louder as speed increases???

pretty much constant whining through 3-6k rpm, gone otherwise. kinda raining outside so i'll have to check when it clears, but will do.

hey i think i park next to you at ucsd all the time, i have the 2001 red R6. if i can catch you before or after class i can take a look and see if the noise seems abnormal or if mine is the same. you bike is stock if it is the one i am thinking of and noticed there is a scrape toward the bottom of the exhaust can, is there an exhaust leak there by chance?

thats what i want to see, my bike may do it but i dont know, i would have to hear yours. my bike sounds and acts normal to me, the only wining i hear is when i deccelerate with the clutch in and that is normal. has your bike always done it or is this a new thing?
melonheadR6

yea this whine is whenever bike is in gear and 3-6k rpm... either accelerating or decelerating.
well i've had this bike for about a month, and i THINK its always done that... not super sure though...
