Maintenance Day Saturday 3/11 at 11 am
Location: Parking lot of BuyMoto 8969 Kenamar Dr.
Bring:
Tools, front/rear stands, oil pans, gloves, paper towels, etc
Other things you may need:
chain brush, WD40, honda spray, chain lube, oil filters, oil, rags - most of which can be purchased at BuyMoto

(since most of us will be riding, Jae would it be ok if we dropped off oil pans before hand or the day before?)

Maintenance days can get hectic, I hope we all have enough respect for other people's property to get through this day with no missing tools, etc. I cannot emphasize enough how important this is if we want to end the day on a happy note for everyone and I do not want anyone to be discouraged from bringing tools and supplies because they are afraid to lose it. Putting labeled tape or markings on your tools and belongings will decrease the chance of yours getting mixed up with someone elses.

Buymoto is kindly lending us their space so anyone attending should clean up after themselves, do not take things from the garage, anything we use needs to be our own, and all waste generated ie used oil and filters needs to be disposed of, not left for the shop to take care of. It is ok for people to share oil pans but please make sure someone will take it afterwards.

I hope we all also realize that the BuyMoto staff will be busy with their normal shop activity. Jae and Bryant will be available on and off to assist us but the point of this event is to hopefully gather enough people, skills and knowledge to be "self sufficient" as a group and carry out oil changes and other basic maintenance tasks. I also believe there will be knowlegable people present so there will be pleny of opportunity to learn new things :)

There will be an additional 5% discount on Repsol oil for Hypercycles members attending this event.

Last but not least, anyone doing oil changes that will need oil filters please post up or PM me with your bike so Buymoto can ensure that what you need will be in stock.

Thanks for reading all my blabber, come, hang out, have fun... hope to see you saturday!

Just took care of an oil change not to long ago. Anyone else interested or knows how to bleed brakes? Ive seen it done on a few bikes, it seems relatively easy. I will try to be there this Saturday.

I'll try to make it out. I haven't ridden my bike in about close to a month because it still runs funny. Let's see if I can make it to Buymoto without the bike dying so you guys can help me.

What brake equipment do i need to bring? The fluid is getting a bit dark, so I thought changing it would be good.

You guys have an OK on food. BUT, please make sure to keep it as clean as possible.
We had a RAT infestation at our store which cost us $$$$$$ in property/product damages and more $$$ to get rid of... The rats even lived off of the pepper packets that come with pizzas, half-half creamers, etc. We caught a huge rat last week and hopefully our last. DO NOT TOSS FOOD STRAIGHT INTO THE DUMPSTER (this is a haven for rodents). BuyMoto will provide trash bags to contain all the trash.

Looking forward to seeing you this weekend! :headbang:

is it possible for someone to help out with a valve adjustment or is this just basic maintenance like changing fluids and stuff??

i also need to change my fork seals/fork oil...

what tools will i need to bring if i could make it out?? (i've never done the two tasks mentioned above...)

thanks, and hooray for maintenance day!

If it's just a brake fluid change, then you can get some dot 5.1 or dot 4.1 which is standard for our bikes i think.... the 5.1 has to be changed every 6 months or something like that but it works better... i guess if its gonna just be fluid, then just bring ur tool kit and it should be fine...

I think it's gonna be basic maintenance.... I dont know how to do fork oil/seals... I'm planning on doing mine eventually, but if you got a service owner manual, willing to give it a shot?

Use DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 (glycol based) only for your bikes. Do not use DOT 5 (silicon based brake fluid). As far as I know, DOT 4.1 does not exist. BuyMoto stocks DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 brake fluids at the store as well for your convenience. If you happen to have a Harley, some of those bikes are shipped with DOT 5 in the brake system. This is the only exception... never put Glycol based fluids in lines that had Silicone based DOT 5... the two fluids do not like each other and I believe they will coagulate within your lines.

It is a good rule of thumb to change your brake fluid every 6 months. Glycol absorbs water over time reducing the boiling point of the brake fluid. This is accelerated when the fluid is subjected to high temps and cools off causing condensation.

All you need to "bleed" your brake lines is brake fluid, a catch bottle, 2-4 ft. of clear vinyl tubing that fits just around the bleed "nipple" on the calipers and typically an 8mm wrench as well as a lot of patience. When bleeding your brakes, be careful not to let the brake cylinder fluid level get too low or you'll suck in air into the lines and that.. my friends.. is what is known as a royal pain in the @$$.

dot 4 comes standard with our bikes i believe or at least it did with mine, and i use dot 5.1 now... regardless, it is a pain when you get air bubbles in as the first time i bled my brakes... twas a pain.... great explanation Bryant.

depending on the weather we might be cancelling this... no one wants water in their oil, and i'd rather not have anyone stuck on their bike in a thunderstorm... plus we'll be outside so i think anything more than 10 minutes will be pretty unpleasant...

i'm bummed, we'll see what happens

Rain!!!! Joe, I'll see you working on your bike in the rain :ha: . I'll pass on this one, I did all my major tuneups when i bought my bike at 10K and did my oil change recently. Need to work on bleeding my brakes but i got the bike manual and tools at home, no need for Buymoto :silenced: . They are good for other things....

Just finished watching the weather report and looks like it gonna be raining a lot straight through Saturday. So pack up your umbrella they say it might even hail. So tech day might not happen.

no go, weather.com says 90-100% chance of rain all day after 10... wet right now, drying up but doubt it'll stay that way, rather not have it start pouring halfway thru an oil change.

finals are coming up in a week, we'll do a makeup after, maybe the beginning of next quarter.

sorry guys.

We had a HAIL STORM up here in Temecula.. my lawn looks like it's covered with white dippin dots!

Big hand to Bi-ying for organizing this event. We will definitely reschedule and make it a fun time for all. Good luck with your finals everyone!
