they say there are two types of riders in this world...those who've gone down and those who WILL go down.

i have finally joined the first group of people.

my house is on a hill and if you were facing the street, the incline goes to the right. my van is parked on the street to the right of my driveway (facing the street). so my bike warms up (facing the street) and i'm geared up and ready to go so i look both ways. my bike warms up to the side of my house on the pathway to the backyard so i have a clear view up the hill up to the bend. a car's going downhill around the bend (about 300-350 ft up) and a car's coming uphill. i let them pass and i check again. clear uphill, but a car's comin from downhill but is quite a way's away. i check uphill again...clear, so i go. but when i get to the street, pretty much going straight, a car comes out of nowhere and i sideswipe the left-rear of his car, and go down pretty hard. my pretty arai helmet hits the road (sorry allan  ) and i roll over once...i think. but all i remember is getting up as quick as i can to turn off my bike which was spewing black smoke.

i'm not sure exactly what happened and how, but his tire was flat and there were some scratches on his trunk and left-rear. a looks-to-be-somewhat-well-off mexican guy gets out and asks if i need an ambulance. i say no and muscle my bike over to the curb. my bike is pretty beat up, but it runs. it just revs because the bars are bent, pulling the throttle cable. i assume he was speeding because people tend to speed on my street, especially because of the decline, up to 40-50mph. also, when i asked him how fast he thought he was going, he immediately replied basically cutting me off (how fitting  ), "it doesn't matter. YOU hit ME." that's exactly what he said...i asked him nicely...he just wants money probably...

so he called the cops, i called my mom. he took a police report and i guess i'll see what happens with insurance...i may be to blame since the evidence shows i hit his left rear, but that could be because he sped past me and swerved a lil. he said he saw me so he tried to swerve out of the way, but i hit him anyway...

so i went to the hospital via mumther, and i leave with a vicodin and cyclobenzaprin perscription, rash on my knees and a sore right shoulder, a ouching left wrist and a slight headache and sleepyness...i guess i'm ok...i'm just a lil sad for my bike and mad at the guy for not telling me everything 'AS IT HAPPENED'...but i don't blame him. i wouldn't want to be responsible for a poor college student and his toy...

pics coming...

so yeah, it could've been worse had he been going faster (than 50mph) and if i had left a second sooner...

oh and i guess the bike will go on sale sometime soon...in its current condition...it's worth around $1500-$1600 kbb retail...any suggestions on how much i should let it go for? it does run...but i think it needs fork alignment and new bars (duh)...

Glad your OK bro...trust me... it doesn't matter what happens to the bike as long as you walk away...bikes heal allot easier than bones and loved ones feelings.

Wow man, glad to hear you are okay. Any bike crash you walk away from is a good one.

If you need to do a valve job on your next bike, lemme know...

they say there are two types of riders in this world...those who've gone down and those who WILL go down.

You know I'm not so sure I believe that 100%. I know there are freak accidents and if there is a freak accident involving a motorcycle it is almost always catastrophic. I don't think everyone is bound to be in one of those freak accidents. As sport riders we willingly subject ourselves to a higherlevel of probability that this might happen but that does not seal our fate. The weekend cruiser does not subject themselves to anywhere near this level of probability.

Ok now that I'm off my soapbox... sorry about your down dude... glad you're okie :)

Glad to hear you were able to walk away from it.

Now go have a beer (if of age) or a coke (if not) and call it a day.

yeah **** happens. We all make mistakes. The important part is to walk away with a lesson learned and in this case it great that you are able to walk away.

any motorcycle accident you can walk away from was a good one.

Just to put your mind at ease, I am the guy that kicks cars that merge into me and raises middle fingers at cagers that are not paying attention.

got to be aggressive, they are all against you:
- cagers
- rolling bacon
- bad weather
- gravity

take heed, you are doing just fine.

what?!

thanks for your support, guys  it really means a lot!

i know that it's not as bad as the other crashes i've seen, but a crash is a crash no matter how bad. mine is nowhere near as bad as almond's, arvin's or snoop's, but i'm glad i'm still gonna be able to cage it to bikenight haha...so much to experience in 10 or so months of riding...

because of recent events, i'm not gonna be able to ride for a while (under mom's roof still  ) but motorcycling is still in my blood so i'll be up and riding soon...but i think i'll leave sportriding to the track for when i get me an sv650s! possibly a cruiser for the streets :errf: haha...i think it'll be nice to use both feet at a stop and to cruise with my girl, comfortably...

Do you have insurance? LEt them take care of it man

yeah...full coverage. but i dunno if it's worth it since the damage might not be worth it...but i dunno. i think my deductable is $500. how's it work if it's only, for example, $350 of damage??

longhornGSXR
03-14-2006, 11:39 AM
you have more than $350 worth of damage...But if you did then if would be smart to just fix it your self...

casper13
03-14-2006, 11:39 AM
well if it is anything belowe your deductable then yes pay out of pocket, but they may total it out though depending on the extend of damage and the cost

glad you're okay! make sure you tell your insurance exactly what you said in your post. The mexican guy says he saw you....THAT IS VERY INPORTANT suggesting that he should have slowed down to avoid you. It will probably also suggest he was over the speed limit.

I hope it all works out...where do you live? That bike looks familiar?

what?!
03-14-2006, 12:00 PM
i already told the cop so i assume he'll put it in his report. i don't remember if i mentioned that...maybe i should have...i wasn't really thinking straight, just crashing and all...

there's gonna be a police report so i assume it'll me sent to my insurance...so then should i just go thru insurance or my pocket??

also, can i call the cop to mention certain details (i may have already) like how the guy saw me and swerved or am i screwed already??

Sorry to hear about your collision, but like everyone else's sentiment, glad you are okay. It could have been alot worse.

ok so a quick update...

i called the UNSURANCE on friday and it turns out that i'm at fault.

no witnesses (and if there were, they'd have to be officially trained to judge speed) and the only evidence is the left rear of his car...

so yeah, i don't think damage is that much to the bike, but i do need to get an estimate on the helmet's retail from a dealer (no reciept) so they can send me a check or something for its value...i guess i'll be using that to fix the bike...

kinda sucks, because from my experiences so far, it's like a lose/lose situation when getting into accidents on a bike...it's either you're at fault and alive, or you're not at fault but you're...you know...not livin' happily ever after...

my friend's bro works at lee's cycle (daniel??) so i'm gonna get him to help me out. the only thing i really need to get fixed is the realignment (buymoto? fbc??). i can do the bars, but i'm a lil lazy so might as well get the pro's to do it.

please pm me if you can help me out, yeah? the pics show all the damage that i could see, myself. i can get it towed somehow (gf has a truck). and i sorta got a list goin of the stuff that needs fixing, but there'll probably be more once i bring it in...

thanks for your support and all! it was fun riding to the bike nights and stuff...great experiences for a noob like me haha...just be nice to me if i eventually get a cruiser, yeah?? naw, jk...but seriously...

I'm new to the motorcycle world and can't imagine wrecking my bike! I guess I am still in the "second" catagory. I've talked to a few guys (my Dad included) who have ridden for over 20 years and never layed down their bike...they are my heros and I hope to live up to their example! haha
Of course it's always good to be able to walk away from a wreck...but it's still a hit to the ego and it might make you a little nervous the next time you get on a bike. Just got to get back in the saddle as soon as you can! This may sound sick...but I'd rather get more broke than my bike! haha! I mean if you think about it...what's the first thing you think about when your dropped? You run over to your bike right? I'd probably notice a scratch on my bike before a broken arm! haha

Well, sounds like you already got the results. at least you were insured. Now assuming you have full coverage, since your insurance is already taking care of the other party, I would just let your insurance take care of your bike if your deductible is affordable. That's just me though. Either way, it's a claim on your insurance. Get an estimate and see how much the damage is....that doesn't cost anything.

BTW, where in San Diego did this happen @?

+1, ditto, ditto, ditto. ride like they want to run you over. and look in their side mirrors to see what they are doing.

does buymoto do crash repair?

hook me up, fellas! :errf:

pls pm me. i'm not sure what you guys' sn's are.

ok *update*

i dunno if many of you guys actually care (i'm sorta unknown :ninja: hehe) but i just wanted to post an update on my bike's sichyation for my own personal documentation issues...hope the mods are cool with it :)

anyways, i dropped off the bike at SD HOM via AAA on friday and finally got my estimate today...

the bad - it's gonna cost just under $2800 to fix. the bike's worth $1600-ish...:errf:

the good - it's $2800 for everything BRAND NEW...so that's a lil "phew-ness" on my part. i think i can fix the cosmetics by myself on my own for a little cheaper. v&h pipe, anyone??

i guess, for now, i just want the bike rideable (sp?) because i miss the freedom on the road and having "the power" between my legs haha. plus, gas even at COSTCO is at $3/gal. so i just want the bike fixed. they're supposed to call back with another estimate tomorrow-ish so i can make a final decision. hopefully it's no where near $700, because that's what SBM quoted me for my helmet, and that's all the cash i got, really...

unnoffical list of things to get fixed:
- stater (not starter)
- bars
- throttle cable
- front-end-related stuffs (not really sure of specifics as of yet, but i should get that w/in a couple days)

thanks again for all your support...i'll be out on the road in no time.............hopefully...

you didnt have full coverage did you

this is just me - but if its worth $1600 and the repair will cost $2800 - its not worth getting it fixed... might as well just get another/newer bike -
good luck whatever decision you make -

I have to also agree with Marvin for the price of fixing it then spend the dough on a used SV for that price. And from the sound of the damage it may be a bigger task than you think so it may be best to let it go

what?!

you didnt have full coverage did you
wow it's been a while...

ok last update...

so everything was settled about a month ago and was deemed totaled. the kbb value was $1300 but i guess that's pristine condition or whatever. i had my bike valued at $839ish w/ mileage and all. minus my full coverage deductable :-p it was $339ish. then adding unused registration and tax or whatever it came to about $450ish...so yeah i was pretty bummed...BUT, the insurance was kind enough to gimmie an extra $250! what for? well, it was gonna cost them that much to get it to a ref to value my 'mods' (i had turn signals, a throttle rocker and a bar end mirror) but they'd rather the cash go to me. so i was pretty happy w/ that. also, w/ the value of my helmet (they said $500, i said $700, so they issued me something like $625) it came pretty close to what i originally expected...

so yeah i have no bike...booo...but i'll eventually get another naked twin...620cc's of italian goodness! G&P will be seein me in a couple years
