I was wondering if anyone knows how much, or how difficult it is to change the gismo on the from axle that helps track the speed and miles. I'm not getting any speed info and my mileage isn't moving at all on my guage for my old school 92 Katana.

it might be your guage cluster as well...are you getting RPMs?
it should just be a disconnect the cable sort of deal.....
go introduce your self in the newbies thread over in the GENERAL SECTION as well

I did check the cable, and it's fine....I think. I disconnected the cable from both sides and it turns. I've played with the guage and I've played with the axle of the rim, but can't seem to pinpoint the problem. Wish I had a stand to spin the wheels. What's the mechanism on the axle that turns the cable? Is it all gears and stuff? If that's so...then it's probably not that right?

Are you talking about the speed sensor?!? I seems like it's more electrical than mechanical.
Yo Samdaman, I see that name all over my friend's Friendster buddy lists. Where did you go to High School?

Hi Arnold, if my bike had anything more electronic than the headlights and the starter motor, I would say it's electrical, but most of the crap on my bike is old school mechanical. I'm thinking it might be the gear in the axle...but I don't know the internals of it.
Jae, I went to La Canada high. I'm famous....or at least on friendster...haha I'm connected to 1million people now. Anyway, koreans are all separated by 2 degrees of separation in California.
 1 million! :wow: I went to Arcadia High so I can see why you are on my friend's lists. Welcome to the club, man!

older bikes get the info from the front axle while newer bikes use it from the front sprocket i believe.
has is always not worked or did it recently stop working? got a manual?

it only just recently stopped working. I don't pop wheelies and stuff, so that couldn't have damaged it...but maybe all these crappy L.A. city streets are doing a fine job on my bike's internals. Anyway, got a manual, but I think this may be beyond me.

The way it works on my 91 FZR is that the gizmo that the speedo whire connects to clips onto the front wheel. It only lines up one way and it will not go in otherwise. This is for the notches on the axel to line up with the notches on the speedgizmo. As the axel turns it turns the speedgizmo which in turn turns the wire which connects to your spedometer and physically turns the needle inside the housing.
Things to check:
Since your cable seems to be turning it can only be one of two things.
1.
The connector at the speedometer housing is busted or has come loose.
or
2.
The gears inside your little speedgizmo thing are busted/ come loose.
You could ofcourse have a frozen needle, but most of the time that is not the case.
I would check at the spedometer housing and se if you se anything wrong there. If that is not the case try takig off the speedgizmo and manually turning it with your hand.
Hope it helps!

I had a '96 Katana that had the exact same problem. Went to a repair shop and explained the problem and they said it was most likely the connector in the speedometer housing as erlend said. They also told me it was difficult to get to in order to check if it is loose or not, but that could just be because they wanted to discourage me from attempting it myself. Never got it fixed, crashed a couple days later...
